Im reading about computer engineering in UNSW site and came across this at the end:

Notes

1. A HSC Maths mark of 145-150 is required in Maths Extension 1 or a mark of 186-200 in Maths Extension 2 or a UAI> 97 in order to do COMP1711.

What is comp1711? BTW, my uai isn't near 97 and i do 2u maths.

Thanks.

COMP1711 is also called Higher COMP1A. COMP1011 is 'normal' COMP1A.

COMP1711 is basically an accelerated version. Material is harder and faster - but alot more interesting than COMP1011

Mind you, I missed out on both requirements by a tiny bit and they let me do COMP1711 and I did very well in it. It won't hurt to ask at enrolment (I had someone that 'pushed' me into it)

Definitely try to enroll in COMP1711 if you're interested in programming. *almost* everything relevant will be taught to you anyway.

Sppt. I just did the normal Maths course for HSC, and got less than 97 but I still did comp1711. I had a nice guy at the enrolment day who let me in.

Like the guys above said, it's so much better than the normal comp class. It's probably worth it for the lecturer alone! I think just about everyone attended every lecture! That's gotta be a record of some kind :)

No, at enrolment if they don't let you into COMP1711 then do COMP1011.

1711 is the advanced version, its the same as having done 1011.

1011 will be easier, but alot less interesting, and you'll be with a class thats alot larger (with a mix of people that do/don't know whats going on).

Like yoshi said, just the 1711 lecturer is a good enough reason to enrol in it.

Also note 1711 scales good compared to ;) , some 20% higher as we've been told.

If they don't let you enrol in it, just enroll in 1011 and jump up. :D it's not as hard as you'd think

Yeah, Richard Buckland is easily the best lecturer at CSE, all things considered. I'm pretty sure he is taking 1711 again next year ?

Most probably!

Except he's no longer teaching algos anymore :cries:

That was the only subject I really looked forward to. And now that he's taking crypto instead (ie, alot of maths involved), there aren't too many chances I'll have Richard teaching me again.
