The Bachelor of Computer Science has a total of 18 + 21 + 12 units of electives in three years.

Does this relate to a minor and is a student restricted in what they can do? For example, can a student take all of these courses outside the faculty of science in a single area over the three year period?

Keep in mind there is no such thing as a Bachelor of Computer Science. People might look at you weird if you say that. Its a Bachelor of Science (its what you get at the end of it).

There isn't really any restriction on what you can do, but here are some suggestions from CSE:

So some of your electives must be in other COMP courses? You can't, for example, do all of your electives in Japanese.

As long as you fulfil the requirements its ok. For example some of the specialisations say:
Students also need to compete one additional level III computer science elective.
You probably can't spend all your electives on, say, Japanese, because there probably aren't that many Japanese subjects.

Thanks for your help, just another question....

How do you rate the difficulty of the maths in computer science

could someone with an average ability in maths who did 2-unit in the HSC cope with it?

A 2/3unit student should be able to do MATH1131 and 1231.

when u go to the myunsw page and u enroll for a certain semester's courses, how do u find out which electives you're allowed to do?
or can you choose anything at all?

You need to know your electives beforehand. As far as I know myUNSW doesn't stop you enrolling in subjects you are not meant to, it only does simple checks like whether you have met the pre-requisite for that course.

well if its ur first year.....then click on enrollment tools on the left when enrolling and then scroll down the page and click on 'first year planner', that should have the subjects and electives (well it did for me).

hmm since i got no where else to put this i'll just shove it here

on the site
http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/undergrad/current/gened.html
it says that CSE students are not allowed to do any gen ed course from science faculty at all?? (at the bottom of the table which says GENSxxxx)

but i recall sunny saying he did astronomy which was a GENS course, so im wondering is this a new rule they implemented this year? or is it still possible to do a science gen ed?

That page has been around, but I would image the last 3 are new since they are red and the two courses listed are new.

But read the fine print:
7-12: Not available to Computer Science students
7-12,21: Not available to cobined Computer Science/Bachelor of Science (program 3983) students
I'm a Computer Science student, so option 21 (GENSXXXX) is avaliable to me. If I was Computer Science/BSc student it would not.

If you did electives in first year, you can choose to continue on with those subjects (so if I did first year psychology subjects, you might continue with second year psychology subjects for a minor in psychology). Personally I just picked other COMP subjects I wanted to do. In secnd year my electives were COMP3311, COMP3211, ELEC2021 and INFS1603.

Just a question sunny, in the final transcript when you graduate, will it mention any minors depending on the electives we chose (specifcally for computer engineering)? Also, does it list every subject you did from 1st year or 3rd year only?

thanks :)

The certificate will just say BSc Computer Science, but the academic transcript will list everything that you have done (all subjects) and mentioning minors/plans.

Hi i was wondering if its possible 2 do a specialisation (i.e. COMPG13978 Computer Game Design & Construction) and a psychology major for the Computer Science degree?

And what if i do a combined computer science/psychology degree? Can i still choose a specialisation if i do that?

I haven't done the maths, but I believe you cannot do two specialisations as there is not enough UOC to fit two in. You can try and plan it out and check with the student office for proper academic advice.

o posted dis in da computing section, how come no one has answered me yet? would appreciate it...i'm askin about comp sci though...thx
I would like to remind you that it is a previlege to get questions answered, not a right. Everyone here answering questions give up their own time to do so.
