Hello all!

I have a small pickle to work out before I start either of these majors, and I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. Year 12 is loading it on already!

Sorry if this has already been posted, I simply didn't know what to look for.

First of all, I have decided what I want to do with my Design and Technology major.
It is substantially large, and consists of a smaller enginneering (metal and a little electronics) part and software part to make the whole major.
The engineering part is obviously a physical model, which I would like to prototype the hell out of first before I make any designs final. There are several things that I am unsure of that I want to get on top of, and fast.

Then there's the software part...
For the engineering part to work, it will need a software based solution via a microcontroller, and control software for the PC.
This is fast becoming complicated, and thus my hopeful solution and possible problem.

What I wanted to do was split the major into two, covering the engineering and most of the electronics part in Design and Technology, and the software part with the rest of the electronics in Software Design Development.

This way I don't have to choose another Software major and I can reduce my workload on one subject by spreading it over two, essentially killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

I've talked to both my Design and Technology and Software Design Development teachers and they're fine with it, but would I run into problems when it came to marking and things like that?

For example, would I disqualify the controller part if it was produced from another subject and vice versa for the engineering part through Software Design Development? The complete design is practically useless because one depends on the other.
The engineering part will simply not work without the software part and the software part is meaningless without the engineering part.

A way around this if I can't would be to take video of one with the other in operation, but it's kind of uninteresting when you can just fiddle with it and see how it really works.

Is there anyone higher up the foodchain I can ask and see if I can resolve this problem?

Another thing that comes to mind is marking dates. What if they conflict?

I'm at a rural school, so we have markers come from somewhere to mark the projects. Do Design and Technology markers mark Software Design and Development projects?

Will marks differ if the software part is used in the Design and Technology part and vice versa? Because I'm essentially re-using each opposite in each major.

If your a teacher or Board of Studies staff member who knows how to resolve this situation, please do post.

And for those of you who want to know what I'm doing for a major: The answer is No.

Thank you so very much for reading and replying (if you do :)).

Justin.

Just out of curiosity, are you using actual software that is cpu based, or are you just hard-programming a microcontroller? If you are using software, are you designing your own circuits or just custom-programming a lego mindstorm kit or the like?

Sorry I can't help you with your queries.

Hey,
The software portion will be both x86 (CPU) and microcontroller based.
The microcontroller will have a Parallel port interface which will also be programmed to respond to button commands wired into a custom control panel.
The x86 portion will just be an extended version of the control panel.

I will be building all my own circuits.

Onto the problem at hand...

I was able to find out the following:

Any major work cannot be used in full or in part with another major.

This is a major let down for me, as it doubles my work load.

Oh well.

Thanks for your reply and interest in my major 'bbounty'. I will eventually release my ideas to the public. I have not released any because there is some patentable material that I would like to cover first. :)

Thunderbolt.

P.S. If a moderator/administrator would be so kind to stick this thread, so others do not make a mistake, that would be great.
