Hello all!
I have a small pickle to work out before I start either of these majors, and I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. Year 12 is loading it on already!
Sorry if this has already been posted, I simply didn't know what to look for.
First of all, I have decided what I want to do with my Design and Technology major.
It is substantially large, and consists of a smaller enginneering (metal and a little electronics) part and software part to make the whole major.
The engineering part is obviously a physical model, which I would like to prototype the hell out of first before I make any designs final. There are several things that I am unsure of that I want to get on top of, and fast.
Then there's the software part...
For the engineering part to work, it will need a software based solution via a microcontroller, and control software for the PC.
This is fast becoming complicated, and thus my hopeful solution and possible problem.
What I wanted to do was split the major into two, covering the engineering and most of the electronics part in Design and Technology, and the software part with the rest of the electronics in Software Design Development.
This way I don't have to choose another Software major and I can reduce my workload on one subject by spreading it over two, essentially killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.
I've talked to both my Design and Technology and Software Design Development teachers and they're fine with it, but would I run into problems when it came to marking and things like that?
For example, would I disqualify the controller part if it was produced from another subject and vice versa for the engineering part through Software Design Development? The complete design is practically useless because one depends on the other.
The engineering part will simply not work without the software part and the software part is meaningless without the engineering part.
A way around this if I can't would be to take video of one with the other in operation, but it's kind of uninteresting when you can just fiddle with it and see how it really works.
Is there anyone higher up the foodchain I can ask and see if I can resolve this problem?
Another thing that comes to mind is marking dates. What if they conflict?
I'm at a rural school, so we have markers come from somewhere to mark the projects. Do Design and Technology markers mark Software Design and Development projects?
Will marks differ if the software part is used in the Design and Technology part and vice versa? Because I'm essentially re-using each opposite in each major.
If your a teacher or Board of Studies staff member who knows how to resolve this situation, please do post.
And for those of you who want to know what I'm doing for a major: The answer is No.
Thank you so very much for reading and replying (if you do ).
Justin.
