Hi, I'll be starting at UWS this year and was just wondering a few things about my enrollment.

1) I'll be doing the Bachelor of Arts and majoring in English, and I noticed it said you need 240 credit points to complete the course. Does that mean over the 3 years I can accumulate those points or I'll need them from the beginning? Because at the moment I'll be doing two year 1 core units, my major (English) and my sub major Philosophy - will that be enough? Also when will I be studying the classes directly linked to my major? Because my timetable I made the other day was just for my tutorials?

2) In the Unit Selection section of mysr, I've selected English and Philosophy - for my major and sub - and in the table it has a column to tick whether it's been completed or not which isn't ticked. Does this mean I've enrolled wrong or that the box will be ticked once i've completed ALL the work?

Thanks in advance

(also sorry if these are dumb questions, i guess i'm just paranoid about everything going perfect gfnfgkgslkgsl)

Welcome to UWS!

1) 240 credit points is over your three years. Generally, each class is worth 10 credit points. (some are worth 20, but I believe this may only be in Medicine) Over your 3 years or more at UWS, you'll generally undertake 4 classes a semester (40 credit points), 8 classes a year (80 credit points), which equals 240 over 3 years! If you receive a pass mark or higher these will count, and if you fail a subject you will not recieve the credit points and (depending on the class) will either have to repeat it or take something else to make up the points before you can graduate.

I'm a little confused about the second part of your question, but I'll try and help out anyhow. The Handbook ( http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/ ) is where you go to find out what subjects you should be doing and when. You don't have to follow it exactly, but it is a rough guide of what and when, you should be doing. At the moment it sounds like your on the right track with your subject choices.

2) I can't help you with this second part. I've yet to choose my sub-major, so I've really got no clue there. Just looking though now, it appears that this won't be selected until you've completed your 240 credit points (for your major) and however many you need for you sub major. I think these are just there because people do double majors or come back and do other degrees, so it needs to be clear what has and hasn't been completed.

I hope that clears up a few things anyhow, and all the best for your time at UWS!

Oh okay!

You can do these whenever you like. Core subjects just have to be done before you finish your degree, and usually end up as pre-requisite subjects for later subjects. You can start these next from next semester and just work your way down the list, or mix and match. You can do which every interest you!

For you degree, you need 80 credit points. 3 subjects you have to be from the Level 3 pool, and with your 4 compulsory ones, that leaves 1 from either level 2 or 3 to bring you to 80 credit points.

Again, you can basically do these whenever you like as long as they are on offer that semester and you've completed any pre-requisite subjects you may need to do!

Since your doing a philosophy sub major as well, you might decide to do 2 from English and 2 from Philosophy each semester until you complete your major and sub major :)
