Is there any indication in the manual what the single LED is for?

If you are up for it, replace the NIC in Computer 2 with this suspect NIC in Computer 1, making sure you configure it just as the previous NIC was configured. And use the cable modem NIC in Computer 1 with the network cable.

Then try the pinging again. If the pinging fails, then it can be safe to say that this NIC is causing the trouble.

If not, give this suspect NIC to a friend who would be able to test it for you.

I've bought a fair few NICs before....and I've never come across a lemon straight out of the box, even very cheap ones.

Hmmm i changed the network cards around as you said. And i cant ping the other computer, or myself. Before, i could ping myself, but now it just says request timed out.

When i ping computer 2, first of all it said "destination host unreachable", i tried multiple times after that and now it just says "Request Timed Out"

The LED on the dodgy network adapter is for "Link/Activity"

If you are sure all settings for the suspect NIC is correct, then its safe to say there is a problem with it.

Yeh i think its dodgy. I bought a new one, ill see how it goes. The old one was weird, the bit that went into the actual pci slot was smaller than the pci slot itself, leaving a small gap at the end.

Have you tried enabling "Service Advertising Protocol" on the computer which can't be seen by the other computer.
