Conservatorium of Music Entry

i've heard all sorts of rumours about getting in the con, like 83 UAI and audition or just an audition. Can someone please set the rumours straight.

Thanks

EDIT:

Hey guys

This thread is the one that used to be called Conservatorium of Music Entry

I've merged several of the threads in the forum in an attempt to tidy up so all conservatorium (Sydney or otherwise) related threads have been placed in here.

These include: Syd Con Life? , MUSIC AUDITIONS/INTERVIEW - Post your experiences here and Con Audition Date released!

Will amalgamate all relevant posts shortly when I get more time.

which con are you trying to get into?
isn't it usually just an audition?
the best thing you could do is go onto the website of the universities or go to the uac/qtac website and look for the course descriptions

THe sydney con uses uai & audition/interview.
I spoke to them recently, and they said a UAI of around 80 should be right. Makes sense, as it's a product of supply and demand, ie out of two equally good auditions, they'll take the one who is also good at stuy, school, etc.
In cases of exceptional musical skill, i suppose the take on people with a lower (or no) uai.
They also require music theory to be at around AMEB 6th grade, or Music Course 2 standard

i think the UQ conservatorium requires that you have AMEB 7th grade music theory, plus you have to do an interview and an audition... but i'm not sure about the UAI cut offs
but i don't think they should include the UAI cut off because to do music you don't need to be smart.

For the Sydney Conservatorium of Music:

  • a UAI high enough to get you into Uni -- this is usually accepted to be 80
  • done NSW HSC Music 2 or equivalent
  • undertake a practical audition or submission as well as an interview for some specialisations AND
  • undertake a written Music Skills test or Jazz Aptitude test

according to my information from the Con, the Music Skills test is roughly about Grade 6 Musicianship AMEB level.

if you want to do Music Ed. you need to take an interview as well.

the audition criteria differs from intstrument to instrument. let me know what instruments you guys do and i'll type up the information here. theres just too much to type if not. I warn you all though, kid you not, the audition standard for Piano Major is f**kin hard.

let me know... :)

Mmm... yay...! I've ruled out the (Syd) Con altogether. I'll never get the standard they need plus the competition must be out of the planet.

Idiot question though - because it's through USyd, if one wants to do music through USyd, that means going through the Sydney Con? Or is there a music course in the main USyd campus?

there is a music studies course you can take at the darlinghurst campus as a major in an arts degree -- thats just music studies not an actual B. Mus.

if you do B. Mus (Bachelor of Music) thats at the actual Con -- man i love that building with its little white turrets... :)

I know!!. also looks good with all those restorations in recent years.. remember the kerfuffle over those?

Mmm... music studies - that sounds about as fun as, well.. mmm. Does it still give QTS for a music teacher in secondary school? hehe...

Maybe it would be more worth it if I just went to the site... I'll find a link.

from what i understand no, music studies doesn't give you qualifications to become a music teacher -- although our good friend Dr. Hindson teaches in the music studies dept. at USyd. :)

From the UAC book 2004 I coveted from school, a "BMus Studies" is actually at the con - unless 'music studies' is also a major in Arts? (Woah this should so go in University - General! hehe)...

Arts at USyd - music as a major.. and yay, Dr Hindson....

Cutoffs (even those these apparently are set to rise quite a lot) 2003 - BArts - 83.25, BMus is the aforementioned audition/interview/submission/tests AS WELL AS UAI (For ccertain focuses).

As for mus therapy/teaching... what would be required would be the BMus plus a Dip Ed on the end of it (if I remember the 3465345 careers lectures we've had) or a BEd completely seperate. But this is way out of my league here.

Hey. I think for the Sydney Conservatorium they want you to have a UAI of around 80. You have to have studied Music 2 or done grade 6 musicianship or something like that. They also want you to do an audition. Thats as much as I know.

the audition requirements for voice major (classical) are:
-one vocal study (eg. works of Concone, Marchesi, Hanschel, Keel, Abt or Diack)
-a 17th of 18th century Italian song
- A Lied (Schubert or Schumann)
- a song of the candidates own choice

all songs should be sung from memory and you should be able to demonstrate the ability to read music.

piano (minor)

a)technical requirements
- all major and minor scales both harmonic and melodic in unison over four octaves
-all contrary motion scales major and harmonic minor two octaves
- all major and minor arpeggios root position only

Prepared program should consist of:
- three contrasting works ( at current level or standard of the candidate but at least one should be the fast movement from a classical sonata)
-sight reading

hope this helps. don't worry about you UAI so much, its the audition that really matters

-sight reading.

Someone Cares!

AWWW!! Thanks for caring ujuphleg! Lol.
I've always dreamed of going to the con ... But not only was Music 2 not offered at my school, I have never done grades (I never saw the point). So am I officially screwed, or is there another way around this problem?
I'm opening this for all. Advice anyone?

the music skills exam is about 5th grade AMEB musicianship level so you're gonna have to know passing and cadential 6/4, four part harmony etc. etc.

i suppose so long as you can PROVE that you are indeed of the standard technically and aurally then i don't see why not. you would have to check with them though.

this is the contact e-mail i have for the brass unit, but things could have changed. give this a go, if not, check out the Con webpage.
