I am in need of purchasing a digital camera of a price range around $200-$300, could you give me advice in selecting digital cameras, one that will actually work for years to come with no defects as well as being reliable overall ?

Currently I am using a Cannon PowerShot A430, it's pretty good, compared to the Olympus I have used previously. With 4MP still image quality and movie mode with audio (AVI - 640x480) it stood at $219 when I purchased it. Now it's somewhere around $200 dollars. The A430 runs on 2xAA batteries and uses SD/MMC cards.

Cannon is a stable brand, you can rely on it for quite some time.

I'm also a Canon fan. For around $300, I'd probably recommend something along the lines of an A540. It's 6MP, 6x Optical zoom, with full Program AE, aperture-priority, shutter-speed priority, manual, SCN and VGA movie modes. I'm currently on the 6MP/12xOZ Canon S3-IS but I've also got an earlier model of the A540 (A510) which I still use in some situations.

Waiting for the 350D successor (Digital Rebel XTi) SLR to come out!
