I decided to do Italian for HSC, but was told that because I lived there for a couple of years, despite going to an english school and rarely speaking italian and never speaking italian with my family, I wasn't allowed to do beginners.

Is it true you aren't allowed to do beginners for this reason?

Would I be able to ask to change to do beginners HSC after doing Continuers Prelim?

Yes that's true. I'm pretty sure if you've spent more than 2 months in the country that you're studying, then you are locked into continuers. Besides, you don't really learn anything in beginners anyway.

Yes, you can't do beginners for this reason.

Once you do Continuers you cannot drop down to Beginners.

Did you learn Italian while you were living there? It is assumed that this is the case - after all, immersion is proven as the most effective language-learning method. I did Continuers and Extension, but I am Italian. Mum and Dad were born in Sorrento. Cont. isn't too difficult anyway - yes, challenging - but no, not impossible. A Band 6 is achievable and if you continue your Italian studies at a university, a mark of 70+ in cont. articulates to Advanced Italian.
