I have a question for anyone who is currently doing or has done Modern History offline. What do you guys think of it?
Some teachers I've talked to have told me it's not worth doing because you're not in a classroom with a teacher and you miss out on the discussions, but some have told me it's good because you can work at your own pace and sometimes the notes you're given are better than the ones given to you in class.

I will be doing it next year because some of my subjects clash with Modern History and I'm really interest in it, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips on making the most of it.

Thankyou!

I did economics by correspondence and you definately miss out on alot by not being in class for discussions.

What is the other subject clashing? Do you want to do modern more? Do you think you will enjoy or do better in modern than it?

If there is a class running at least you will be able to get notes of that teacher and see them about your work which would be quicker than emailing your correspondence teacher. If your school is smart they will amke the teacher taking modern your supervisor, in fact if you do do correspondence insist on it.

The main problem I had doing correspondence was getting lazy and falling behind in the work because without a class pushing you along its very easy to put work off.

I do all my subjects via correspondence and it's up to the person doing it. Correspondence is just as good as a 'normal' classroom teaching; it just depends on your own dicipline in studying and doing your work. It just depends on what kind of environment you learn best in, if you need a class of peers to push you along and teacher constantly on your arse to do your work, then it's not going to be for you, but if you wander off and do your own work from your own initative and prefer studying alone then it's probably the best option. I work best by myself so I find correspondence the ideal learning environment forme. You can always ring up/email/send notes to your teachers if you feel unsure about stuff and want to know their opinion so it's not like you're lacking communication with your teacher.

Either way, if you feel you can do it and you really want to do it, then go for it :)

i did it in year 11, when half my modern classes clashed with ext1 maths. i didnt do 'correspondence' as such, i just had to choose which class i was going to go to for that day, and catch up on the one i missed. initially i attended the modern classes, and my math marks suffered dramatically. in the end i had to skip most of the mods classes to go to maths.. unlike maths, my modern marks didnt suffer. as long as you have an understanding teacher, who is willing to spend time with you and let you know what the rest of the class is doing, and you have some friends who are willing to share their notes, you should be fine.

didnt happen to me again in yr12, but i imagine it would be much more difficult...the few people who still had a clash ended up dropping one of their subjects..... :S

So for those who have done distant ed, did your marks in your exams suffer in any way because you weren't sitting in a classroom with a teacher teaching you? Or do you think you actually did better?

Modern History clashes with Advance English so I definitely had to choose Advance english first.
