well your school gives your internal marks and ranks to bos. when the exam marks are in, they compare them to your school marks...if the whole school performs better than the internal marks suggest, the internal marks are moderated up (because its assumed you were given comparatively harder tests) or conversely if you guys perform worse the school marks are brought down.

your exam mark is essentially what you deserve

Um. Internal marks do not count.

The moderated assessment mark is the mark that is given to you in accordance to your internal rank [based on school assessments] while another 50% of your mark is the mark you get [moderated] in the external.

school marks can't be looked at, because, in order to be compared to how the state performs, everyone must sit the one exam.

People that perform poorly throughout the year will have lower moderated internal marks then their HSC exam marks. Averaging both the moderated internal mark and aligned HSC exam mark, ensures students that perform well throughout the entire year will be rewarded with the best HSC marks.

Your exam mark is essentially what you deserve given if your teachers marked at HSC standard and aligning up marks, with you putting in the same effort throughout the year.
