Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question, but I was just wondering roughly how many courses I should be taking per semester doing the combined comm/eco degree @ unsw.

Do I have to complete the core courses within the first year? or can I do them whenever so long as they are completed.

Also is the workload larger in the first year as you are doing the general/basic courses rather than the second/third/fourth years where you specialise more?

Thanks.

I don't know about your particular course but a full time course load is generally 4 subjects/units a semester regardless of your degree. If they are first year core courses you will probably be expected to complete them in your first year. Generally when you go through enrollment you will have to talk to someone who knows all this stuff already, they'll tell you what you have to do, and recommend what you should do.

You can do first year courses throughout your degree but only a certain amount of them will count towards your course. So if you can only do 8 or 10 first years, and you do twelve, those extra two will still be on your transcripts, and you can still use them as pre-requisites but they do not count towards your degree, you'll have to make up those extra units in higher level units later.

I don't know about the readings and workload regarding that, but I don't think it gets much easier as time goes on.

covered pretty well already but...

sometimes some courses are only like half courses, worth on 3 UoC rather than the usual 6 UoC. so sometimes you will do 5 courses per sem, with 2 courses worth only 3UoC.

generally the core courses are prereqs for other courses. id check up on this before you delay taking a core subject until final year

my intuition is that you should expect the reverse. you are learning the basics in first year but then when you get to specialist courses it does mean that there is less stuff for you to learn. but since it is a specialist subject the entire field is more finite, and you chose it, you should be trying to learn as much as possible about that finite field, so you will do more work. you could also argue that to really understand and use a specialist field, you need to know a great deal about it.

Thanks.

just quickly (to add onto the above)

If you dont do prerequisite first year courses in first year, then you may not be able to do 2nd/3rd year courses. This might fuck everything up, so be careful
