I know I will probably get shot for this, but the Tori Amos cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Also the Graveworm cover of REM's Losing My Religion.

joni mitchell's cover of john denver's "leaving on a jet plane" is amazing.
fiona apple's cover of the beatles "across the universe" is on par with the original.
and
kelly rowland's "i'm beginning to see the light" (harry james) is strangely entertaining.

elliot smith's "jealous guy" (roxy music) is great too. i hate the original.
his version of "somebody's baby" (jackson browne) is pretty good, but so is the original. its hard to say.

Perhaps you should actually hear the original, by John Lennon, then.

jimmy eat world - last christmas (i can't remember for the life of me who originally did it, but i love this cover)
the get up kids - close to me (pixies)
hanson - optimistic (radiohead)
the get up kids - suffragette city (david bowie)
sarah blasko - flame trees (cold chisel, i think)
the shins - we will become silhouettes (the postal service)

and a couple of covers that i think definitely don't live up to the originals;
the white stripes - walking with a ghost (tegan and sara)
sarah blasko - don't dream it's over (crowded house) -- as much as i love her
iron and wine - such great heights (the postal service)

Atticus.

how do i get out of this
