Or, discuss any final essay question/topic of your choice.

three half-days for 3000 words, baby. I have no idea how the hell I'm going to string it out for so long...

I think the essay's meant to be only 2500 words, so that's 500 you don't ahve to write..hehe
I did the cute topic for my presentation, it's a good subject......I'm going to be lazy and PM you my essay (it got a distinction:)) instead of making a real comment, heh. I keep changing my idea of which question to do!
good luck!

ah yes

my arts200 is 3000, so must have got them mixed up.

Oh and you rule :D if you end up doing the kitsch and art one, let me know 'coz I did my presentation on that and can send you my essay (it could be good, it could be crap, who knows? the office ladies maintain that my tutor hasn't handed in any papers yet, even though Maria says she has...)

yes, and now I need to link that to sadism/grotesque/mutilation. :(

You'd think there would be japanese links galore to this kind of thing, best I could find in library was Pokemon though (and the article mostly talks about cuteness in relation to commercialism. Great for ARTS, not so good for CUL).

I should look on e-reserve...

There's a good book in the reserve section of the library, I think it's called Themes and Issues in Asian cartooning, had a whole chapter that was very handy - Cute but Deadly" .
Themes and issues in Asian cartooning : cute, cheap, mad, and sexy / edited by John A. Lent.

I'm doing the subculture question, focusing on culture jamming. Or at least I will be once I get a move on....

ok I don't know whether this is just because I'm doing the wrong thing, waffling too much, not really 'critically analysing' sources enough, or perhaps I've finally discovered how to apply myself to work (or any combination of the above) but my cuteness essay is really roaring along.

I'm concerned. 2500-word essays aren't supposed to be this fun :/

EDIT: I was right, they aren't. almost at the 1700 word mark, and almost totally out of things to say sans-sources. Hunting for more (good) sources now >.<

ooh. Ok, this Cute But Deadly chapter? Good. Almost too good. I could re-write my whole essay on "kawaii" now, I think. Although I have a strong feeling they'd like at least half of the essay to be from a western perspective of 'cute', as well.

Claire, how much of your essay was kawaii-based? How did you merge them together?

(screw pokemon, this is so much better! just a few pages in and there are great stuff on roundness and cuteness being limited to pre-pubescentness, hurrah)

I actually didn't do very much on the kawaii stuff at all, also cos I wasn't quite sure how to fit it in. I did get a lot of general quotes about the physical properties of cute though.
Oooh, it's just started hailing at my house (off topic) I'm cutting this short- good luck with it Lynn!

for the record about half of mine was based on kawaii, and I did a kind of western/jap cute culture comparison thingo. :) Finished it yesterday - will do references another day.

Good luck with yours! (wherever you and Mr Hail are!)

I'll email you a copy when I'm done, if you like :)

Emailled tutor today. He said the kawaii stuff is fine, but I need to make sure I do stuff right (currently I don't think I am. and that's as good as my dead mind can describe it)

>.<
