crappy 92 what can I do (1 Viewer)

I did my HSC at tafe due to bullying.

I got an atar of just 92 and I'm quiet upset about it.

I could have easily gotten more if I, you know, didn't take a week long holiday from studying. I would have taken a month or two off from studying all up not including actual scheduled breaks.

Any other folks with low 90s have much success at getting into dentistry? Or even medicine or veterinary science?

I am very happy with my podiatry degree prefer as it has great employment prospects and is well paid for new graduate jobs but if I don't end up liking it or want a career change, what sort of GPA would I need to get an interview for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science?

And would I have to do the degrees from scratch? Podiatry does very in depth biomechanics and is supposed to be quiet extensive and difficult as a degree. Surely I would skip two years of a med or denstry degree given podiatry covers anatomy and physiology??????

Any first hand experience?

First of all, your ATAR is not crappy.
Second, you would not be able to apply for those courses without doing the UMAT (med, dent, optom).
You would need to do STAT for Vet Med, I believe.

I believe if you do Podiatry Med, you can apply for MBBS and specialise in Podiatry surgery (this is at UWS, I'm not sure) and you can do 2 years of the MBBS.

GPA requirements aren't necessarily high for graduate medicine 6.0+ GPA would be ideal. As for podiatry I am not sure if you can transfer credit points, usually you can't for medicine or dentistry. And you are right podiatry has great job prospects compared to medicine and dentistry. If you haven't realised it now it's actually easier to get a job as a podiatrist than a doctor. Also with the willingness of many oversea's dentists and doctors willing to take pay cuts a good podiatrist makes around the same.

Your ATAR is excellent, not 'crappy', you have a lot of opportunities that you are opended up to. Anyway, anything is achievable because of all the different pathways. Medman has experience studying med and he is in his last year. Well I am 28 now and looking for a career change. Podiatry really appeals to me. I prefer lesser known, less popular degrees that still have very solid employment prospects and incomes.


I guess in another 12 years if I want another career change, I will have to look at the job market accordingly as that will dictate my decision making.

I just want to do more surgery heavy careers and veterinary science seemed appealing ( shorter than med too)

There are only about 20 podiatric surgeons Australia wide..

It is harder to get into than medicine. Some years there are only three places available for new surgeons to qualify.. For Australia and new Zealand.

I've been told if I want to be a podiatric surgeon that I have a better shot at just doing plain medicine lol.

I am hoping the scope of podiatric practice starts to encompass more pathways into minor foot surgeries. Also more training in pharmacology would be attractive as chemistry is my favourite subject and I would love to know a lot more about drugs to prescribe.


Pharmacy I had the marks for at.Newcastle uni and I would have loved that but the job outlook is so shit and the professional looks to be a bit of a joke. Poor pharmacy grads :/

Sometimes I guess we have to settle for the best possible outcome even if it isn't you're number one career choice initially. I am still pretty stoked about being a podiatrist someday soon and it is still the kind of degree I know i will happily live and breath lolz.

In the future though if I got bored, it would be nice if the basic anatomy and physiology 101 courses counted as credit toward any other allied health degree I may look into in the future.




I am so.happy I found poditary now: with a 73 ATAR cut off, no one wants to deal with feet all day and so it is far from being over saturated and hard to get jobs as yet......

I was going to pick radiation therapy or diagnostic radiography but decided against it since it has shit employment prospects for current grads.




I think people may catch on that podiatry is a very challenging degree with a good graduate uncertainty for doing very little work ( you cut toenails and chat to people a lot of the time and get paid 55k.as a new grad to do.it)



It will be interesting to see how the allied health ATARS fluctuate.... And to see medical imaging once again become an in demand career with decent rates of employmemt among graduates.

My friend got into dentistry with a ~70 ATAR after a year of nursing with very good GPA at Griffith.

A 92 still has a lot of play and fades to insignificance after a year of uni.

If you choose a challenging field in any degree it'll be difficult to get into. Dermatology only takes about 3 doctors per year and once you're in a medical degree the competition level skyrockets as everyone is pretty much brilliant in some way or another so you must consider this before applying for medicine. Also you need to do the GAMSAT which isn't an easy test in itself either.

I recently graduated from podiatry, and if I can give you one tip before you undertake podiatry.. be aware that you will be clipping a LOT of nails. It is very repetitive.
You will barely do any biomechanical things like you would think.
I would've definitely studied harder to transfer to physio or medicine if I can turn back time.. sigh..

In regards to Radiography whilst it is an awesome career the job prospects certainly aren't great. I just finished my degree and am one of the I'd say over 200 students in NSW looking for my first position, if you do pursue this option be prepared to work as a podiatrist for a while until you can your first break in DR, it can take up to or over a year for some grads to find work.
There is quite a bit of physics involved and now the focus is shifting towards producing graduates that can not only perform general radiography but have basic training in CT.
Having previous training in podiatry will help when you have to interpret some of the more interesting request forms we get that come from podiatrists.
I can't really talk much about Sydney's program (I'm Newcastle trained) but if you have any questions about Radiography in general I'm happy to answer.
