A small rabbit hole....
When you do a 4unit maths problem, do you :

a) "Crash and Burn" as so aptly dubbed my Maths Teacher meaning jumping in and trying every possible formula on the question

OR

b) Approach it in a logical fashion?

combination of 2...
If you know exactly what method has a good chance of working (make sure you can do this BEFORE the exam), then go crash, because it'll work a lot of the time... instinct is good
But if not, look at it for say 15 seconds, then crash.

Logical is good, but it's a good idea to eliminate down to 2 or 3 methods and then choose one, otherwise you waste quite a bit of time...

I crash, that's my main problem actually. I get the question out, takes about three pages. Then tell my teacher there must be an easier way and he then does it in about half a page, very frustrating! But I normally manage to finish my tests so it's all good.

when you do exercises, you always do it logically, and try to crank out the shortest answer.

Then crash in exams.. first 4 questions should be automated

that means... you can check out the hot guy/chick next to you (not his/her paper)while writing down the solutions to questions 1-4.

questions 1-4 are usually routine

you generally know what to do when you approach a question and what topic it would go under. i think you would take a combination of both. i think for 4 unit questions, if it comes to you, then it will come straight away. otherwise you'd be stuck altogether.

not really KNOW automatically what to do. More like, you do it without thinking about it.
