i received a past students creative piece written as a news paper article in the exam, if i take the same idea but change it to a narrative, alter the characters and setting, is it still classified as plagerism? or will they not pick up on it?

Depends how much you copy? I'm not sure what constitutes as plagiarism.

But will you get caught? certainly not.
