This was the 2005 HSC creative question on CF
“I’ll commit the perfect crime: a murder with no trace, no clues, no body. With no evidence, there can be no solution. As if nothing happened. No motive is to be discerned. Have I ever committed a crime if it cannot be pieced together? If its story cannot be told? No-one can outwit me, not even you.”
Write an essay evaluating the ideas, conventions and value in CF expressed in this thought.

That quote is like perfect for my supp text, Murder By Numbers, coz the criminals think they can commit the perfect crime, they get rid of all evidence, well I don't know if it's good enough lol, but sounds just the movie anyway

i found this question ~~ "As an expert in Crime Fiction, compose the speech you make that examines the VALUE and LIMITATION of the genre to society"

can anyone explain the values and limitations of the genre to society?

does da value mean why the public need it?? like escapists after WW1 to forget their past trauma's?

why it's important to society and how it is limited

so it's important because it examines the flaws of contemporary society eg. pornography etc

not sure how it is limited.

I'd say it was limited in the degree of accuracy of its portrayal of real life events eg. I doubt the isolated manor whodunnit stories occur frequently in real life

Mmm but that's only in the past... to get a good mark, you'd have to have more points than that.

Hmm but it's still true to a degree for modern crime fiction as well!! The inaccurate portrayal of the hostile society (this was emphasised by our teacher - name serial killers that have appeared in australia the last 5 years! Not a big number, really..) and whatnot... there's also the denouement and how much of crime fiction is limited by the expectations set by the genre to conform to the good old "dtective restores order". So I guess crime fiction is limited by its expectations/conventions? :S

Or something like that. I've got my extension trial next thursday ><

i'd say the limitation of genre is, being defined by conventions established in the golden age - to adapt flexibly to contemporary texts, their contexts and values. =] which is...in a way...what you were saying ^ pat.

Ok agreed... limited by its conventions.

I just wish they could ask a straight-forward question where we outlined what conventions are adhered to in a text, and how the composer transcends them or something.
or history of crime fiction cause i pre-prepared an essay for that.

i'm so glad my ext. trial is over... mine sucked big time for me!

just wonderng, it seems some of the earlier HSC creative questions are more concerned with texts ie. asking you to write an interview with a character or something..

have they since changed this? or is it possible for them to give us a creative piece like that?

While I don't know the answer to your question, I do feel your concern.

There's no way I could write for an hour about one of my characters.

And read all the past questions. I won't because I'm too lazy, and I'm not sure past questions really reflect what they'll ask this year.

aha im with you. i have lost all motivation/dedication by this point.. im not sure i could muster up the energy to attempt old papers.

i'm just getting in there with a pre-prepared essay of the fascination of crime fiction... if it's anything different i'll adapt my points.
also, just going to make up creative stuff it!! lol
