I'm planning to move down to Melbourne (from Syd) for about 1 year for a graduate job. Perferably living close to Southern Cross Station.

I've been down there a couple of times, but I've heard the CBD has a high crime rate esp. at night, with the alcohol and violence. Can anyone confirm this? Or recommend a safer suburb close to the CBD/transport/and food?

ive never lived in either place but i totally agree with what you said riet... bloody idiot. Just live out of the city a bit, far cheaper and closer to cheaper food shopping.

You will be fine if you're not an idiot and don't go walking the streets late at night/early morning. Live somewhere like Elwood if you want close to the city.

Waaaaay away from the CBD... But Burwood would suit nicely, lol.

The CBD is pretty fine at night. Even during NYE when you'd expect there to be brawls etc.... Last NYE we were on the river for the fireworks and headed into the CBD. Not once did we hear angry yells or see a fight in the entire 6 hours we were out.

It's not that bad. If you want to go out at night consider Chapel St, hardly any violence there.

Just stay away from Dandenong.
