Particularly regarding USYD, which major best complements an economics degree?

Can anyone who is familiar with one or both \provide some info on what they entail, what it's like to study them and how useful they each might be?

Note: Not from USYD or familiar with economics

what it's like to study them and how useful they each might be? Data science is data science. stats is stats

If you want become data scientist then go with that. If you think stats might be useful for certain careers go with that. Data Scientist sometimes use statistics, for ML algorithms.

So what I would do is look at job requirements for what you are interested in and then make decisions based off that.

Summary: No particular opinion

Stats in the workplace is mainly for calculating, interpreting and presenting for decisions.

Data science is all of the above but would also involve sourcing, transforming and finding ways to automate the data that form the stats. Usually Big Data and BI tools are your bread and butter.

AI, machine learning and having the ability to dumb it down or spice it up for the right audience is the clincher while running the Project that does all of that.

There is a lot of debate about whether data science or stats majors are better equipped to handle big data. Both majors have their pros and cons, and ultimately it comes down to what you want to do with your degree. If you're interested in working with large data sets and performing analytical tasks, then a data science major may be a better fit for you. However, if you're interested in more theoretical statistics and working with smaller data sets, then a stats major may be a better option. Ultimately, it's important to choose the major that best aligns with your interests and career goals.
