If i buy a mobo which is compatible with say like pc3200 can i run one stick of pc2100 in it? I have a spare stick of 256mb pc2100 and thought maybe i can use it in new mobo. Is it possible?

i think it depends on if your motherboard can support it or not, refer to manuals

This will depend on the mobo. RAM that uses the "PC" rating just rates the maximum bandwidth that the module can handle. It is basically telling you what the max FSB the module can take. This is a good page with the conversion.

Its common and possible, but not all mobos support all FSB speeds. You should check to be sure.

For example, its pretty safe to say even if your computer can support PC100 and PC133, it probably doesn't support PC66!

just try and see what happens...
and it's true that usually both RAMs would run at PC2100 speed, except if ur m/b supports different speeds for different RAMs modules.

I have a ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard which supports PC3200 and a think more than that also, since the other shit is too expensive I dont touch it.

I currently have 1x512DDR333 (which I think is PC2100, correct me if Im wrong) and 1x512DDR400 (PC3200), I run the DDR400 in the primary slot and the DDR333 in the secondary. I have only hit one problem and thats the once fabled "blue screen of XP" after RAM konked out, that was after a 32 hour gaming stint but :)

Shouldnt be a problem but, it just wont work as well as of course 2 sticks of DDR400 RAM.

DDR333 is PC2700.

Are they both running at 166MHz or 200MHz?

an easy ay to identify what is DDR333: 8 x 333 = 2664 --> 2700
DDR400: 8 x 400 = 3200

And DDR 333 actually runs at 0.5 x 333 MHz but there are virtually two modules so the speed is as if it runs at 333 MHz.

I would rely on your graphics memory and processor speed moreso than your RAM.

Come to think of it, graphics memory probably doesnt count, but there is a hefty price difference between 3200-3700 last time I checked.
