Decarbonating soda water CALCULATIONS help!! (1 Viewer)

Hey guys!

I've got the decarbonating soda water prac due tommorow and I'd just like to check my calculations and if they're reasonable or similar to what you may have got.

Initial weight of soda water: 346.65 g
Final weight of soda water: 340.85 g
Mass change: 5.8 g


  • The volume of gas evolved (at 25 degrees and 101.3 kPa)
n = m/M
n = 5.8/44
n = 0.131818181

V = m . Vm
V = 0.131818181 . 24.5
V = 3.23 L

3.23 L of gas??! could that be right... the bottle is only 346 grams... is the gas really compressed that much?!:confused:

your answer is right... assuming no silly mathematically error...

in fact, one of the dangers working with liquid nitrogen and nitrogen cans is that nitrogen expand really fast, and very quickly displaces all the oxygen in a closed space...

but the teacher asked us to leave the the beaker contained soda water in the class and reweigh it every day for a week

While we are talking about this prac, i have 2 discussion quesions that i am struggling with:
1) "Write a balanced chemical equation that would show how CO2 estabilishes equilibrium with water."

2) "In terms of Le Chatelier's Principle, explain how the reaction with sodium hydroxide can remove all carbon dioxide from soda water"

1) H2O + CO2 <----> H2CO3 <---> H ++HCO3-

2) adding hydroxide react with H to produce H2O... equilibrium shift to the right, so more CO2 will be reacted to produce CO3... hence eventually all CO2 in water are removed...

I believe this same equilibria exists in our blood ?

correct... it's daunting of a thought that our blood has similar constituents as the evil coca cola...

Coca-cola is just a substitute for metal polish except with sugar.

But its stregth ? Hmm ... H2CO3 <--> 2H+ + CO32- ... Well it dissociates into two ions, but the CO32- isn't likely to break down any further, I dunno the verdict.
