I am not saying that you have to get a band 6 in english standard. A band 4 or 5 is good enough required that effort is put into the other subjects. Don't worry about the scaling bs

as someone who did english standard and switched to advanced (ie i have experience with both and im not just being elitist), ignore all of the stuff above because it’s just plain wrong. in order to get the same scaled mark (and therefore atar) from english standard as you would with english advanced you need to effectively be putting in the same amount of effort as you would be in advanced. this means that you should not pick it to reduce your the effort you put into english because that will reduce your atar. if you really want to put in less effort just do that in advanced

the reality with english standard is you still have to write just as much stuff for your hsc, it’s still just as boring and painful there’s no real benefit other than less motivation to try harder and likely less support from your teachers and classmates to help you do well. yes it’s possible to still get a high atar with standard but you’ll have to put in enough effort that you might as well have done advanced anyway. if you care about your atar, there is little to no reason to choose english standard

Do not pick music and advanced english, no need to do/specialise in subjects that you will not be doing once you finish high school. I recommend that you pick standard as it requires way less prep. Don't be one-sided in thinking and only caring about the atar. Develop skills and try to specialise in subjects that will actually be useful in your future endeavours. Trust me, doing this would boost your results in your 'main' subjects. Since your job is science related, advanced english and music have nothing to do with it. The atar is not just calculated based on your results in english. Plus, you are planning to do extension 1 maths, which is a very demanding course. Also, make sure not to pick subjects like legal and history as these subjects also do not have a good transfer in increasing scientific knowledge. The last time I checked, advanced english was not a prerequisite in any science-related course in uni. Don't just be an all-rounder and instead try to specialise at every moment possible. This is what gets you way more ahead in life. Hope this advice helps
high school specialisation really doesn’t matter the content is all so surface level anyway, as long as you’re doing the decently enough in the main prerequisites and assumed knowledges for your uni course you’ll be fine, beyond that it’s good to pursue your passions and interests! and don’t worry about subjects being demanding you should still apply equal effort anyway, it’s ok to get lower marks in demanding subjects because that’s the point of scaling

Do not pick Advanced English, it would not be really relevant for a job like that. I am thinking of doing sport science in Uni and am in Year 10 as well.
I am picking:
Advanced Maths (You could pick Extension if you want to)
Standard English (Would not recommend Advanced for a sports related job)
Biology (Important subject that would help)
Chemistry (A prerequisite to most sport science courses like the one at UNSW)
SOR 1 (SOR 2 is too much and will have to deal will Islam, not bothered with that. The exam is also 3 hours so good luck to people who choose this)
Health and Movement Science (previously known as PDHPE, is important for sport related jobs like a Physiotherapist)
SLR 1 (just a 'bludge' like @carrotsss said to fill in a missing unit)

What I would do if I were you:
Advanced Maths
Extension 1 Maths
Standard English
Biology
Chemistry (A prerequisite)
Health and Movement Science (Could drop in year 12 if you don't like it as year 12 has a minimum of 10 units, not 12)
SOR 1 (RE is compulsory in a catholic school)

Don't choose slr as it is PE at a lower level and would be good for people wanting become a coach in the gym, but do not suit a higher level sports job like a physiotherapist. I hope you found this useful!

Also: If you have discord, message me at uerktmvincents for more questions. I am on a similar journey to you. I would like to know, what sport do you do? I do athletics, particularly the 100m and 200m.
Brother pls take english advanced and not standard and thank me two years later

@jonolad69 explain to me why she should do advanced english and not focus more on subjects that are relevant to her like bio, chem, maths and pe. Those subjects will be more useful for her if she wants to become a physio and picking standard english will allow her to specialise in bio, chem and maths. Bro is acting like year 11 and 12 is easy, it is not. Standard English will just build foundational writing skills for those subjects like biology. Doing well in Standard English would be better than doing alright in Advanced English in my opinion and English requires a lot of prep anyways. If she hates English as a subject anyways, why not choose standard? It makes the most sense in my opinion @jonolad69. Haters gonna hate.
They are literally the exact same subject with different texts genuinely no difference in the effort maybe the texts are a bit more difficult to understand but litcharts exists for a reason

@jonolad69 Even though you are toxic and in year 10 like me (even though you try to make it seem otherwise), after talking to younger teachers at my school you are right about the scaling and all. This would work provided she is pretty good at english but hates it. After talking to her a bit on discord, she came to the conclusion on what level on english she wants to pick. Considering advanced english is harder, if she can cope with it she can keep it in year 12 and If it is too hard for her she can just drop it the next year. @jonolad69 You said they 'ruined' PDHPE without any thought that they actually made it better and more applicable to higher level sports jobs. She should choose these subjects if she wants to become a physio with a good atar in mind:

Advanced Maths
Extension 1 Maths
Advanced English
Biology
Chemistry
PDHPE
SOR 1

@jonolad69 I am confident will be good for her as she will like these subjects and actually get a good atar because of this. 🤷‍♂️

I know you mean't that sarcastically, but maths is very important in sport science and not as 'easy' as you might think. Most sports science courses have maths advanced as a prerequisite. At least look at some sport science or other related courses and requirements before saying that.

@K2Trappy, they changed PE to make it more content heavy. Maybe think about that before drawing conclusions that PE sucks for sport related jobs. It is about sport and exists as a subject for a reason.

It is fun and not as boring as a history subject that wouldn't even be related to her job.

It is fun and not as boring as the other options. It is the next relevant option for her job after chem, maths advanced and bio. If she doesn't like it, she can drop it entirely (year 12 only requires 10 units). That is the point of picking 12 units in year 11.

As someone who did Music 1 - would say that it wouldn't be worth it if you don't have the passion/time. Because you have to do 3 electives (either performance, musicology, composition) + 1 core performance it ends up being a lot of work (particularly if you choose composition/musicology), and of course the HSC exam which is aural skills. For you I would go with the advice of most people here and choose PDHPE.
