I had a look on the defencejobs but couldn't really find anything about this -

What sort of opportunities are there for working with defence intelligence? (Both collection and analysis.)

How competitive is it? How can I tell whether it's the right thing for me?

Hi Robert,

We recruit directly into the Air Force for Graduate Intelligence Officers. As well as fulfilling the HSC education requirements for officer you would need a uni degree in a science or technology field, or an Arts degree with certain specialisations. Please have a look at http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/careers_explorer/RAAFMain.html and follow the links to Officer entry/Graduate only/Intelligence for the full education requirements and job description.

You can also have an intelligence career in the Army or the Navy, however you would not enter directly into this career stream. You would need to enter as a Seaman Officer in the Navy or a General Service Officer in the Army. Through the course of your career you may be selected to enter intelligence, however not everyone is given this opportunity so you would need to be prepared for the reality that you may not be selected into this specialist stream.

Officer jobs are always competitive as the Defence Force are looking for people who can demonstrate an ability to lead and have an aptitude in their chosen specialisation.

If you would like to know if the Defence Force is for you, it is best if you contact your local Defence Force Recruiting centre either in person or over the phone. You can discuss all aspects of military lifestyle with a Defence Recruiter.

Regards

Jobs in intelligence

Hi again

In addition to Officer careers, the Australian Defence Force also have plenty of other jobs that are connected with Intelligence. For example:

1. Signals Operator Linguist (be an language expert)
2. Air Surveillance Operator (work with high tech radar technology)
3. Airborne Electronics Analyst (sit in the back of an Air Force aircraft and conduct surveillance and other duties.
4. Imagery Analyst (works with Intelligence Officers)

And these are just a few examples of careers that are connected with Intelligence.

These are General Entry and Opposed to Officer entry positions and they do not usually require Yr 12 qualifications for entry. Again please contact us on 13 19 01 and book yourself to a JOES (Job Options Evaluation Session). JOES day are the first step in discovering what jobs are available and what jobs you are eligible to apply for. What's more - there is no obligation to continue with your application if you don't like your options. However, we have over 280 different types of careers so there is bound to be something you'd enjoy!

Good Luck
