hey ppl,

are u allowed to defer during your course? I'm in first year (Comm) and want to defer next year for a year.

I looked at this webpage:

http://www.uws.edu.au/about/adminor...ions/postgraduateadmissions/newinfo/faq#defer

and it said:

Can I defer my course?
No. Deferment of an offer from UWS or commencing your studies in a future teaching session in a postgraduate coursework programme or a post-initial teaching course is not permitted. You will need to re-apply through UAC for the teaching session you wish to commence in.

Is that for people who haven't started the course or does that apply to me as well? Pleeese help!

hey,

You can apply for what's called a leave of absence as long as you have successfully completed one or more units. A year is the maximum amount of time you are allowed. If you want to apply you have to submit a leave of absence form to a Student Centre, which you can find online at the uni website or at any student centre. Make sure it is submitted before the census date (31 March) so that you don't receive any academic or financial penalties.

Here is the link to the form online if you're interested, there's also a second page with some additional comments about the process involved.

Thanks heaps, that helped alot. Repp!!!

I'm going to do it for next year, so does that mean it's ok if I complete all my units this year and then take next year off? Or do I have to do one unit next year before I leave?

You complete your first year subjects as normal. Then you need to fill in the leave of absense form before the HECS census date in first semester next year, (I dunno, you might also need to fill out a program variation form). Then after you have taken the year off, you need to fill in the program variation form, and add the second year units (which will effectively be your third year enrolled at uni). I hope this is what you wanted, and it made sense :p

you're welcome and yep, as cape has said you just complete the units you are doing now...you don't have to do one next year, you just have to have completed one full unit in your course overall which you would have done by the time you apply. The form itself should explain everything you need to know, but if you're stuck you can always contact your student centre and they'll run through the process with you. :)
