@ everyone else: DET school staff accounts have more filtering applied than TAFE staff and students. If you can tack down a TAFE account, bingo for you. They can access Hotmail and the alikes and many other things.

From memory, TAFE staff and students (roughly) > DET school staff > DET school students. I could be slightly wrong with the TAFE staff/students bit but they pretty much have the same levels of filtering.

iBurst (or what I call, iBust) isn't that great in classrooms due to the construction of the building. Neither is that 3G broadband stuff from Optus, Voda etc.

Private schools aren't filtered as much, but they still are filtered.

I doubt they'd be filtered to the extent DET filters to though.

Nowhere near!

The DET filtering is worse than China's internet censorship...

It works in all of my classrooms.

Yeah they are filtered a bit, but we can still access hotmail, gmail, myspace, facebook, and Youtube. Youtube was once blocked due to too many people using it, but the "Senior School Committee" demanded it to be unblocked because it was an 'educational resource'.

Heck, there was one stage where they have disabled the filters temporarily due to some issue, this went on for like one term IIRC. Someone told me about this, and was like "as if..." and I tried porn.com, and it worked to my dismay!

I never knew that thanks. Where are the DET forums?

Personally i have a teachers account, and that cant access webmail (ports 2095 and 2096), i havn't tried hotmail so i don't know yet. Getting access to ateachers account is dead easy, get this the secret question of my account is the capitol of some country (quick wiki = password).

If you guess the secret question, wouldn't it ask you to reset the password and not give it to you? Wouldn't the teacher notice that they couldn't login?

But then again, if they write a general knowledge question as their "secret" question, then I guess they wouldn't be using technology much...

That is webmail for cPanel, and it's blocked for a good reason (IMO). If organisations (not just schools) allow any port then, issues like outbound DDoS attacks get hard to trace and block/delete offending user. Plus it stops alot of illegal stuff (like file sharing, etc).

@pwoh

That is not the case, i reseted the password for a teachers account, and he/she hasn't changesd it back since.

@jm01

It depends, but IMO it shouldn't be blocked I am a user of cPanel and i do manage webpages with it. BUT cPanel isn't blocked (port 2082)

@ pwoh: The process goes along the lines of... answering the secret question (correctly) and then you get asked to input a new password. It's that simple.

@ LtPhoenix: Staff accounts should be able to see cPanel webmail. Funnily enough even student (school, not TAFE) accounts can too. It may depend on the domain you access it via.

cPanel isn't blocked? That certainly is interested, as most organisations, as I said do block all ports except for 80, 443 (SSL) and maybe 21 (FTP).

@jm01: If accessed through a domain that isn't blocked. Accessing via IP for both staff and students = no go. That got blocked 1st October 2007 as part of the transition to the whitelisting system as it falls under uncategorised/spam email.

Alright im on the same boat as you guys, trying to get access to websites which are blocked by DET Portals whitelist. I just found out that they have just recently started using whitelists, becasue everything was coming up as "uncategorised". Also i think the idea of blocking "technical/business" is absurd and that the DET Portal should rot in hell, for doing that. I believe that the DET is using whitelists is to pre-ban anonymiser sites (commonly refered to as proxies).

My theory is that the use of a VPS will allow us to circumvent these blocks (not tested). A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is basically another computer. In order to access a VPS, you must first rent one from a VPS provider, then with the use of Remote Desktop Connection (Windows), you should be able to login to your VPS, and because your VPS is using another ISP, you should be able to circumvent these blocks.

A sure-fire method to circumvent these blocks is obviously with the use of a teachers account (tested I have done it myself), although the use of a teachers account will not be using the whitelist ban system, quite a number of sites are still blocked (annonymisers, warez, filehosts, etc.). To gain access to a teachers account, you must know the username and password (obviously). All students and staff on the DET Portal have access to password recovery questions (Hint: Use a teachers account from a past school, and also make sure they dont go online often). Further steps needed but will not be provided.
you can guess or you can look over the teachers shoulder as he/she types the password in. It works too!

Oh Mr Kumar you poor soul ^^

the portal was annoying but I used three ways to get around it:
PHP proxy I wrote.
Google cache/translate for static pages
TAFE account.

PHP proxies = blocked
Google cache - I use that, but they aren't as recent and also no logging in/interactivity.
TAFE account - now that would be interesting....

Cool, I'll add you sometime after my yearlies. When was the last time you used them though? Because their whitelist is highly unlikely to let through any proxies.
