ti sais my motherboard can support 400 mhz ddr ram
That means you can use DDR 3200 (400 Mhz), DDR 2700 (333 Mhz), or DDR 2100 (266 Mhz) RAM in there. You can't use DDR2 though, and don't even bother with SD RAM.

it also depends on your CPU, and what its clocked at, im assuming your an P4 northwood core user?

Oh yeah, 2-2-2-5 is pretty useless except for overclocking.
Still faster. Last top of the line machine I built (alas, not for me) included the Corsair PRO chips, firstly for the speed and secondly for the reliability.

Sasha, DDR PC3200 sounds like your best bet.

Casmira, it shouldn't really matter about the CPU... the only thing I can think of that would make a difference is if it were a much newer P4 or an athlon. Which it isn't :)

Which, in real life, is going to shorten rendering time by 10s max for Photoshop or Premier. So only people like us who run PCMark04 or SANDRA, record score, overclocker and repeat would really care.

It's rather poor value for your average person.

It would be a Northwood, so 533MHz FSB, but not much difference in cost between 3200 and 2700, he might as well get 3200.

higher memory bandwidth yeh, not really effective on an athlon system but you are sure to notice in on a northwood core where the fsb is twice as fast

my system;
2800+,
NF7-S V2.0,
2x512mb geil pc3700 dual channel ram DDR,
ti4200 A280 LTD leadtek (still plays latest games perfectly),
4x200gb hdd, 1x80gb
SB Live! Sound card
LG L1710S 17" LCD
Mx700 cordless keyboard mouse
liteon dvd reader / cd burner (seperate)

my ti4200 used to run at like 50+ degree's and that's effect memory performance (tests), i improved the airflow, removed some things, added a top exaust rear intake and window intake and the memory bandwidth increased a few percent, video card runs on full load at 30 degree's :D

Dual channel's like RAID 0 for your RAM, although I don't think your motherboard would offer it.

Think the bottom line, Sasha, is to go out and buy some generic PC3200 DDRRAM. Unless you're running world simulator in your spare time, 1gb is the maximum you should need for anything, and if you stay away from high-end games (bf2, anything on Source engine) 512 should do you just fine.

Actually, never buy generic RAM, espeically considering the minimal cost difference and how different brands should in theory work together, but in reality is another thing.

There's no point in getting 2GB+. Most of the chipsets won't recognise it, and it would just be wasted. Although I tend to disagree with saying that you should have 1GB since RAM is so cheap now, unless you got a PIII or something older.

generic ram goes down harder than a $2 whore, you need to get yourself samsung ram, the price difference is at the most $5 if its anymore you are getting ripped off

long time ago there was ~$50 differences in brand names, but its not like that anymore

Purchase your ram from MSY ... Prices are;

Samsung DDR 400
256M $66
512M $75
1G $160

Kingston DDR 400
256M $45
512M $75

There is an auburn branch, open mon-sat, full details http://www.msy.com.au/LOCATION/auburnshop.html

Don't buy anything else, you dont need high performance RAM even though it is faster, unless you are/was a heavy gamer (like me ;D) you have no use

Yes, it does. As time goes on, new, faster specifications are released. At the moment, there's various incarnations going up to around 550 Mhz. However, if your motherboard doesn't support it, it will only run at the maximum the motherboard can handle (in your case, 400 Mhz).

Secretnet is the consistently cheapest place to buy computer hardware in Australia. Or so I've found. I find that if you buy gear from, say, a computer fair, you tend to get what you pay for. Of course, I'm from the newcastle region, so you lucky people in Sydney might get a better choice at better prices.

512mb of Corsair Valueselect will set you back $77. Generic is $71. I retract, go the brandname. Corsair is great if you can get it :)
