Im slipping into an attitude of "meh, pass will do" which is weird for me cos im usually a stickler with marks (in the HSC, anything below 9/10 in an assessment would be a tragedy for me *rolleyes*).

I've kinda stuffed up this semester with severe laziness and chronic procrastination so Im hoping to start afresh next sem. Except, I need a credit average in one of my subjects to be admitted to honours stream next yr *prays her stupidity hasnt cost her a chance at honours*. Screw everything else, Im just focussing on one subject now to get good marks.

I'm going well.
So far sitting on a HD for IRHRM
D for ECOP (getting a 20% essay back wednesday)
Pass for ECMT (but I didnt do maths in year 11/12)
Credit for mktg. (I'm aiming for D)

I need a d average to transfer, so I'm working super ultra hard. like a thai prostitute trying to contract crabs.

Not doing any work at all while you're paying $3000 a semster to be at uni would be classed as moronic.
I don't know how good you are... but I was offered your best scholarships at Syd Uni and UNSW which I declined. I don't get HDs in my final assessments too often for law subjects.

I do maintain an average of 90 in my commerce subjects though, with my lowest scrore being 87. So like everybody has said, depends on what course you're doing. And I'm sure it is a lot easier to get a scholarship in some less popular degrees than others... because I was told this by the Scholarships Office at Syd Uni and Melb Uni when they offered me scholarships.

Wow... massive act of thread necromancy here.

But, how much work must you put in to maintain a HD average for Commerce?!

That's mindblowing!

Also, seeing as you're admitted in law to practice in that state, I really don't think you would have taken a scholarship at sydney if you lived in Melbourne. Out of curiosity, what was the 'best' scholarship?

Not that much work... as your hint of sarcasm suggests you realise. The message I wanted to get across was that getting good marks depended on what course and which subjects you were doing.

I specialise in accounting/finance. As most of you probably know, accounting is pretty straight forward. I'm sure if I were studying actuary, that'd be a different story; it'd be a lot harder. And I presume if I were to take on some of the really hard medicine/science/engineering subjects, I wouldn't be able to score many HDs.

For the previous poster: the best scholarships as in the undergraduate scholarships where I would have been exempt from HECs and received money.

I chose Melb over Sydney simply b/c I live in Melb, as you aptly pointed out... I kind of regret the decision. I should have went to ANU, seeing they paid handsomely and there seems to be some general consensus that it's the best uni. The ENTER (UAI) requirements put me off though... so did its city.

You've all just made my day.
I did my HSC in 2002... seems like a long time ago!
I'm now looking at doing honours next year at either Newcastle or UOW after doing my undergraduate at Victoria University of Technology in Melbourne. People had been telling me that VUT marks funny, that our distinction marks are much lower than everyone else's. The marks I've heard people bantering around are pretty much the same as ours. This means I have a distinction average and can apply without stressing out of my head - hooray!

Hope everyone is succeeding at what they want to do. I miss Sydney, can't wait to move closer to home and warm weather!

75% isn't easy at uni compared to school. Just keep that in mind. Most first years start uni thinking like yeh they can get 90s easy, but yeh its hard.
As you think, you shall become.

If they don't give 90s for whatever reason.. why should it be out of 100?

because that's the way it works.
lots of lecturers believe that no work deserves 100 except their own.
Marketing, for example, at usyd, only gives out 0-2 HDs for most subjects. Those HDs are only marginal 85-87 range.

Same as for most essay subjects: if you get anywhere near 90, it's an amazing achievement.

And that's because the science department puts pressure on the university board to put pressure on the arts (or whatever other) department to limit the high marks allocated in those subjects that are perceived in some academic circles as easy. Because this would, in a roundabout manner, devalue the superior education being imparted to the science students.

I'd like to see a mathematician write a think piece on the middle-east conflicts or a concise and engaging analysis of Persia in the time of Darius and then tell me how easy it is. They'd be back to their offices in a flash with their rules and laws and balanced equations and such...

Wow, such an insightful piece.

Lets generalise as well, how about an artist go build a self directing vehicle, or an engineer go operate on a horse...

You decided to focus your attentions on the arts, they decided to focus their attentions on other things... Cry more.

I'm also ANU Arts/law looking for Syd/UNSW transfer. I've been told UNSW better (depending on what you're into). The way I see it combined law 5 years. I've dropped a few units so I'm already on to 6ish years. Post-grad will not make that much difference. Also means you can concentrate on one thing at a time. If I don't get the law transfer then I know I can cruise through arts for a while.
