Does anyone do single-course distance education at:

*Sydney Distance Education High School or
*Open High School

What subject did you do and what have been your experiences of doing it?

I do German cont. at Open High School.

It's definately not my preferred method of learning, but since I like the subject a lot, that keeps me motivated.

PROS
- get to hang out in the air conditioned room off the library with computers ;)
- can treat it like a free if you're ahead or will do the work at home
- can do it on any line
- it's fun when you go to sydney and meet your class.
- the course is very structed... not like having a teacher who never shows up or goes off on a tangent easily

CONS
- lack of teacher/class interaction
- i don't entirely feel comfortable talking to my teacher on the phone
- can be hard to stay motivated
- don't get much speaking practise - not good in languages!

What subject were you thinking of?

yeh i do a single course at SDEHS and i very much agree with your pros and cons elisabeth

further pros:
- less assessments
- work is very comprehensive... so u get everything syllabus states that u should know

further cons:
- using post
- u dont know how well ur doing compared to the other people in ur class (u only get a rank and that doesnt explain alot as to how close or far away ur competitors marks are)

What subject, rantman? I agree with your points too. Especially about assessments - they only take 20 minutes or so, I don't stress over them because I don't know when they're coming or how much they're worth.

Hey
I do ancient history at SDEH, and well, i find it hard to keep up with the work only because you dont really have a teacher encourageing you, plus the other ppl who have the same free periods as you tend to distract you. Of course, im only making up excuses for my laziness :)

i do latin at OH.
pros:
since latin aint verbal, (its very textual and immersive in words) there is no real need for teacher
self discipline
learning at ur own pace

cons:
procrastination
dont learn the context as well as u normally should

any fellow latinists out there OH or not, give me a PM!

I do Indonesian at Karabar High DE centre. Its good because I live close to school so I go home during my lessons and I get a lot done... I like being able to spread out work all over the place rather than trying to organise it all on a little school desk!
the only thing is that there is a lot more work than all my other subjects.. because there isnt any of those lessons where the teacher just talks and you take notes. Every lesson there is texts to read, tapes to listen to and worksheets to complete.

I do Japanese Beginners at OHS and Legal Studies at SDEH.

I found more problems w/ doing legal studies than with japanese.
- You become so lazy to do the questions because a lot of them require you to think and not cut and paste.
- the worst con -> the PUBLISHING. I dont know if anybody else has the same experience, but publishing work can be hell, especially if you write out the work on the work sheets. But hey, its practice for those long essays in exams...
- on the other hand, the teachers can be quite flexible. they can push assignments back.
- I agree on the point of motivation though; it can get hard

In general though, i received much much better marks in correspondance than in normal school. If you stick with it you can actually do very well, despite the cons.

I do General Maths through Oten (Open High School).

So far it's been really good! I like the freedom and there is SO MUCH less stress! :uhhuh:

That's an unusual subject for Oten... how did that come about?

Well...long story, but in short! I couldn't fit into a class at school and so I did it through Oten.

I'm happy bout it though, I get lots of support from teachers at my school also! :)
