I personally dont like political music. Even when my favourite musicians like Bob Dylan do political songs I dont listen to them much.

Most music is political anyway, whether it was intended or not.
It's just the influence of the period it was made in.

Yea, but Im talking here of bands with overtly political themes that run through their songs. Bands like U2 or RATM.

music is fundamentally about expression, i dont see why politics should not be allowed in the equation. whether you agree with said politics or not is a different matter

People should be able to express their political views through music. I personally don't agree with the messages of a lot of the bands I listen to, but if the music's good, I don't care.

they do go together, just like themes of love and partying and alike are in so many songs. music can be inspired by anything and can contain any subject matter, doesnt make it any more or less legitimate.

I think politics is the opposite of expression though. Music is about raw emotion and feeling. Politics is about thinking rationally.

but isnt the creation of music with political content an expression of ones feelings towards the topic? the expression of ones views on politics

Rage Against the Machine (RATM) do it greatly, even though i dont agree with their views, i would have to say their music was good

I find I can't really take the songs seriously - especially the more modern political songs (Green Day - American Idiot) I applaud them for trying to make a point but in the end they are entertainers
