So now you have your resume done and ready to post it to your prospective employer, hoping that the next call you get is from the hiring manager.

But, instead of praying for the best, what could you have done better to up your chances of being accepted into the interview?

Tell you what, I'm going to reveal to you 3 things you can do to your resume right now so that you can get at least 80% - 90% chance of getting that job interview.

1. Use high quality A4 paper and laser printing - Go get yourself high quality printing paper, it doesn't really cost that much. Just think of it as an investment. After you've done that, get a laser printer to print out your resume. If you don't have one, go borrow it from someone kind enough to lend it to you. If you do this, you'll be jumping ahead of at least 50% of your competitors.

2. Make sure your name, address, contact and email account is right on top of your resume, in BOLD. This is just to make sure that the hiring manager knows how to contact you in case you are chosen. Double check that you have not mispelled your particulars as this can be very crucial.

3. Add a short showcase message right below your name and contact info. Something like: "TOP-PRODUCING MARKETING SALES PROFESSIONAL, Lead Generation & Networking Specialist, High-Impact Presentation & Closing Sales" This will provide a hard-hitting punch that immediately sells your value to a prospective employer and compells him/her to read on.

1. The last n times when I had to send in a resume it was as an email attachment

My advice is to put most of the things in the advert into the resume even if its something as generic as Good organisational skills. Usually companies use comuters to screen resumes and search resumes for such terms. If you keep in line with the advert then you have a better chance of being shortlisted. What would be horrible is if your resume was not read at all.

What paper got to do with anything? Experience will always speak for itself and you will be hired for that.

ive read the paper thing in an american guide to investment banking interviews and things. Its a trivial thing imo. Also, its irrelevant in this day and age when everything is emailed.

But routemarker has made a good point, a lot of the agencies use screening programs for key words.

Yeah, I seriously don't think it matters. Unless your e-mail address is lets_get_some_shoes_betch224@hotmail.com.

However, if you're going for a position at Pierce & Pierce, it would need to be printed on Egyptian Papyrus in Helvetica Italic 11.

I don't think, for example, 80 GSM paper will get you a different result than 90..but..make sure, if it is a hard-copy that you are submitting, that it looks presentable..no tears, no creases (apart from fold marks if you have to post it in), no coffee marks..even at a lowly supermarket (where I work), one resume was immediately tossed in the bin because the person had changed her phone number, so instead of re-printing the resume, she stuck a piece of paper over the top of it with the new number on.

When i saw the title of this thread, i thought it was going to be 3 things that would make a large difference. Employers are just people, they're not some weird alien race with wildly different values to ours.

The difference between a laser printer and an inkjet for something like a resume is negligible.

Furthermore, I wouldn't want to work for a firm that is so shallow they would use the quality of the paper and printing on that paper as a screening process for potential employees.
or maybe they think it shows your character by the way you present your resumes?

I might add some more.
-Lengthen your employment details and education details rather than just one line.
-Remember euphemism. If you feel that you haven't got much to say, then change the words around a bit.
-For interests, just say the stuff that link to that job.
