Well, if you're going to be bringing in a calculator, it MUST be board approved. It should be self explanatory, if you want to use a calculator for the maths exams, you'll need to get your hands on one that is approved. So if you need to buy one, I would suggest you do so. ;)

I'd advise against this. It's better to have one which is approved well before the exam so that you can have more time to get used to it.

Here's the current list of approved calculators:
http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/manuals/calculators_hsc06.html

Also, don't take a non-approved calculator to the exam. Don't risk having it confiscated during the exam. Also, you won't be allowed to borrow one during the exam.

That reminds me - you should buy 2 of them, preferably two of the same model, so you have a back up if one stuffs up or runs out of battery.

Personally I have several.

But I don't require students to buy several. Only 1 that's approved is sufficient.

I would say to students to at least have a spare battery and screw driver ready just in case.

Woudn't it look a bit shifty if you were in the HSC Exam, you start banging your calculator because its battery runs out and then you are frantically screwing the back of your calculator off. That and if you tottally freak out you may go on a spree with the screwdriver (Well I know I might.....might)

But some of these new calculators people have at school, they look like graphic calculators its a bit weird

It'll take too much of your precious time, switching the batteries, better to change it to a new battery the night before, and bring an extra calculator :p

Don't worry about bringing spare batteries, just bring another board approved one of the same model like I mentioned before. :p

It shouldn't take long to change a battery. So I wouldn't say you need a spare calculator. Just take a spare battery and screwdriver just in case.

However I would advise you to take a spare pen.

You're all being a bit excessive there.
For my math exams I had:
1 calculator.
3 pens, 2 blue 1 red.
1 dodgy ruler that looked like it had been bitten to death.
That's it. :p
