Abbott to waste money on medical research
Source: Sky News
The Abbott government will pump $559 million into medical research funding to find better treatments for common diseases such as cancer, diabetes, asthma, arthritis and cardiovascular disease.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott wants the funding to also help find new ways of tackling mental illness, dementia and indigenous health.
His first major health announcement, at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Wednesday, came after Mr Abbott toured a laboratory to speak with researchers about future research to treat burns patients.
'The government is determined to do everyone we reasonably can, even in these fiscally challenged times to ensure Australia's health and medical research continues,' Mr Abbott said.
'At this point in time, we don't have additional funding but we are determined to ensure that the funding goes as far as it can that's why there are some changes coming to increase the length of most NHMC grants so people spend more of their time researching and less time filling out forms.'
Investing and supporting medical research is one of the best long-term investments in health that a government can make because it improves life expectancy and takes pressure off the hospital system, the government says.
The funding will support 963 grants across three National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMC) research schemes and support five fellowship schemes.
Victoria will receive $236.4 million, with the state's Minister for Health David Davis saying the grants would strengthen Victoria's hospitals and research institutions internationally.
'These grants can only help to build on best practice and help us get one step closer to tomorrow's cures,' Mr Davis said.

Can you provide a link?

Theres no logical argument against medical research and its outcomes. Anything from prothesis to vaccines to the things listed in the article are so critical to man kind.

Would you rather have tax cuts or increase funding for medical research. The Liberal Party under John Howard preferred giving tax cuts rather increasing funding for medical research. Tony Abbott when he was Health Minister took a sledge hammer to the Health budget and to medical research funding.

Whoever doesn't agree with the increase of medical research is a single minded idiot.
I personally know a Professor who has his PhD in Genetics; He has been working on cancer treatments with a big company that is funded by the government. They have been working on a new treatment for cancer for over 10 years now. Their treatment has been tested successfully on 50 patients at Melbourne Hospital and is now being tested by 5 other hospitals across Australia, However 2 years ago the government cut the research budget by $1b to add more fundings for the military and the professor said that this budget cut put them back by yeaaaaaaars.

I would rather pay more tax than the medical research budget to be cut.

most medical innovation is done by private drug companies which is built into their profits so no i dont support more research funding especially for universities.
There is a lot more to the medical field than just pharmaceuticals lol

people also forget the fact that science as a whole is a HUGELY multiconnected field. You discover one thing in chemistry boom maybe it has a medical application. You discover something in physics one day BOOM MRI machine. you can't just focus on "medical research" every other field needs to compliment each other.

well that certainly happens but the marginal gains in medical knowledge from spending additional unit of money on medical research >> that from spending additional unit of money on e.g. physics research

your point is also kind of irrelevant because the thing being discussed was that medical research can be done privately, not all research

You realize most research done today isn't just by companies alone right? Most of the time its a collaboration of government, private institutes, universities etc etc working together. Even most high tech stuff like semi-conductors research can't be done by companies alone because of the huge economy of scale involved.

except when you're 'merican...

$559 Million is no where near enough... need $1.5 Billion to at least help deal with mental illness alone...

We need 1.5 Billion dollars to help deal with mental illness. What complete nonsense. The so called mental health crisis is no crisis at all. We need to be efficient with tax payers money. I want lower taxes and an economic conservative government. Shame on you Abbott for selling your soul to greedy criminals i.e. psychiatrists/ mental health specialists.

Funding increased from $8.7 billion in 2002-03 to $10.7 billion when the Howard Government left office.

Great point. Science funding as a whole is laughable and has been under both parties.
