80/120 will secure a band 6
Why is it so low...that means only 10 marks seperate 40 marks and, in addition to this, no-one gets 100 unless they actually get 100. gay gay gay

justchillin, I'm not too sure about the raw mark of 100% gets 100 aligned, and only a raw mark of 100% will do so. Consider the fact that people get 100 in ext 1 maths, but don't necessarily place 1st in the state (or equal 1st). So thy perhaps got 83/84 or something and still got 100. Correct me if i'm wrong.

The highest aligned mark last year in Mathematics Extension 2 was 99. However, this should be scaled to 100 in the UAI stage. Unless you are very close to perfect score, I see very little chance of someone getting 100 aligned.

I know that someone from my school got 100 in the 1999 4u exam algined, but then my teacher told me he didnt neccessarily get 100% raw mark, and he didnt top the state either. Although apparently it's done differently now than in the old hsc.

About the band cut-off's here's a different way of thinking about it:

Work out about what mark you would get in 2unit as the 2u mark according to SAM doesn't have to much done to it, if your getting a mark which should get you a b6 in 2unit then assuming your 4unit abilities are proprotional to your 2unit abilities and that scalling is a fair process you should get a band E4 in 4unit :).

Personally I average about low 70's and I'm almost 100% certain I would get a b6 in 2unit so assuming my marks are proportionate to the average marks then I would say you would need about 70/120 to get a band E4.

Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong but thats the way I see things (Hey I could be entirely wrong but I dont think so :)).

You're all here talking about what your marks will get you instead of actually studying for those marks! Hehe...

In my opinion if you get 75/120 or higher that will get you a band E4 unless it's a really easy exam. This years exam won't be easy though so perhaps 70/120 will get you into band E4.

75 sounds too low if you ask me... I reckon 85 at the minimum. If it's as low as 75 then that basically puts the difference between someone getting 100 and someone getting 115 as 1-2 marks in the end, which I don't think is entirely fair.

As I said previously I get about 70-80 doing past papers, if I was doing 2unit I would get a band 6. So is it entirely fair that my mark doesn't get scaled to band E4? Besides the space between the marks isn't what's going to affect the UAI, its your ranking which will affect it.

yeah im pretty sure i would get b6 for 2u... but i dont think im capable of e4... how does that work..

but i thnik ~70/120 is too low for e4.. thats 50 marks!

remember people, high scaling subjcts such as 4 u maths scale the highest at around the average to median mark. if you go to sam and type 80 aligned in (which is prolly around 60/120) it scales very close to 90, whereas someone getting say 100/120 will get prolly 97 which scales to about 98. A 50 mark difference, yet the scaled mark difference is minimal.

Remember: scaling takes most effect if you get the average if you come at top its minimal

Well scalling is meant to assure that us guys who do more difficult subjects aren't disadvantaged for doing them :). So if you can get a b6 in 2unit then your mark in 4u should be (unless your abilities are out of proportion) sufficient for the equilvelent band in 4unit which is a band E4 (Correct me if I'm wrong?). So yeah its alot of marks but achieving a 70/120 in 4unit isn't any small achievement when you compare it with the difficulty of obtaining say 95% in 2unit.
