The cutoff you see listed on UAC's website represents the ATAR of the lowest ranking individual which got accepted into the course.

They are there only as a guide, not as a target in most cases.

Cut-offs are determined after the offers have been released. It is a supply/demand basis. You can't achieve the cut-off when you don't even know what it will be.

Generally, the cut-off is determined by the ATAR of the student who received the last offer. However, the published cut-off can be nominated.

So, if a uni has 500 spots available, you compete for 1 of the 500 spots, i.e. the top 500 ATARs will be accepted. If you are outside of the 500 spots, then you won't receive an offer.

Well no it doesn't.

It really depends on the competitiveness of the applicants. For example, the cutoff for UNSW Media (communications and Journalism) course has jumped up by 10 ATAR to high 80's in recent years. Similarly, Med Sci degrees are in the 90's cause people are applying, hoping to transfer into Med. Similarly, those who just missed out on Med, with 98+ ATARs also apply for Med Sci, hence making the cut off jump up.

If you don't make the cut off. Just do something else and transfer.

I think ATAR cut offs are determined by demand. If each course only allowed let's say 100 people and the 100th person who got in had an ATAR of 90, then the cut off would be 90. That's why it changes every year (usually, often things like med and law are fixed)

Then how does UTS' guaranteed scheme work? what if 200 people apply and they all meet the guaranteed entry scheme cut-off and only 100 people are allowed into the course, what happens then?
