Sorry if this is a dumb question, but a syllabus dotpoint (in meonitoring and management, water) mentions methods to purify and sanitise water, whereas the textbook (conquering chemistry) talks about clarification and sanitisation.

The words don't, but it is likely that in this particular instance the textbook meant purify. Why don't you read the section and think.

I have a digital version of the newest CCHSC. It says:

In Australia water treatment generally means clarifying the water and sanitising
it. ‘Clarifying’ means removing any turbidity or colour so that the water
is sparklingly clear and colourless. ‘Sanitising’ means removing anything,
particularly organisms, that would cause the water to be harmful to people.
Clarification is apart of the purification process.

Hope that somewhat helps.
