Communists, Socialists and Leftists don't believe in happiness that doesn't involve narcotics, it's against their religion or something.

You're a twat. At least now I've been given some insight into the minds of the feral arts students that habitually drift around any university campus. Yes, don't follow societal trends. Yes be "alternative". Yeah dude, all power to you for "sticking it to the man" and not wearing anything bought from outside a St Vinnies Store, but to be honest - nobody really gives a flying fuck.

No, I don't wear Von Dutch. No, I don't own a Prada handbag and no I don't own Nike shoes (In fact, most of my clothing is either shredded denim or leather :p), but am I bothered by other people wearing Von Ductch clothing? No, only a twat (like yourself) would be.

Multinationals that employ people for low wages aren't the problem. The conditions that make said people work for such low wages are the problem. Poverty isn't the fault of the west but rather civil unrest and greedy despots. I don't see how companies that actually EMPLOY PEOPLE cause any damage socially or economically.

Conforming to societal trends doesn't bother me too much. People actively trying to rebel against trends definitely bothers me more..

Most people that are rebelling are just following another fashion trend... I don't believe that beauty is entirely a social construction, and this goes for fashion too.

Absolution*, are you implying that over-indulgence is a societal trend? Where's the line for over-indulgence? I think it's accepted pretty widely that we live in a "materialistic" world, and that "over-indulgence" is a common theme to peoples' lives, but they're accepted without much evidence other than that everyone else is saying it's happening... (I'd be interested if it has been analysed, but I'm sure there'd be extensive counterarguments, too...)

Conforming to societal trends in the form of overindulgence (on the assumption that it is a trend), but conforming to societal trends, in general, doesn't bother me. It's natural for humans to want to look at each other and do what brings about a reward, or do what certain others do, and if enough people do that act it becomes a trend. Conforming in itself is not so much a problem until you put it in a context: conforming in the context of a riot is bad, conforming in the context of doing what your friend does is pretty neural IMO..

...so I voted Yes. Overindulgence as a growing societal trend does bother me. :)

University has so changed the way I think.
