It generally doesn't matter unless the edition asked for has specific content not found in others (e.g. for readings). One or two editions back should suffice for information gathering for assignments.

That's just personal experience btw.

Wow just found out that I have had Biology by Campbell for years. But the edition is old.
If I had made a uni textbook and wanted to keep making money, the most logical thing to do would be to release new editions.

I don't know, personally I've always found that edition really DOES matter... A lot of the time homework. assignments and readings for class rely heavily on the most recent edition, with references to page numbers/reliance that the information is identical.
