I'm just curious, because this show shows how life sucks as an intern/resident.
JD said "the average resident earns as much as a waiter" and the characters barely have any spare time. This is also true for Dr. Cox who is a senior doctor but sill unable to do anything outside of the hospital.

Does watching scrubs make you want to choose another career or is it like this for most top professions?

its more comical than real hospital..

im not too deterred and im a huge fan of Scrubs. ..
the show represents balance.. Cox being one end of the spectrum... and JD and elliot trying to figure their own way out..

this is about maturing..albeit later in life

there are some doctors like Cox.. but usually they are v. social and nice ppl..

Yes but most medical doctors are heavily quizzed on the feet.. so a good memory for facts is always handy..
"Top 5 causes of hypertension, about what ratio, name 4 risk factors, what physical would you do? what investigations could be done"
.. in 2nd yr (of a 6 yr course) you'd be able to get about 70% of that.. so its just about training up.. its not hard..its about good learning techniques

I was watching Scrubs before I got in, and loved it. Of course, I focussed on the humour (like betting on the geris - "Jello is for winners").

yes ure right..

but scrubs is exaggerated and its the effect [unless in the US its a lot more... he might be right.. lik after u pay ure loans.. then u pay ure taxes... waitresses dun have massive student loans..]

.. but waitresses can earn up to $45K/yr ... full time in NSW.. (not incl overtime) but not many ppl take this option..
and tats more than the base NSW intern pay.... thank god for supply-demand curves :D

Hell no... it makes me want to do it more!!!

also greys anatomy makes medicine seem to fun and interesting, mostly because the doctors are so HOTT!!! sure you wouldnt take medicine...

the unfortunate thing is that greys anatomy didnt start until after i chose not to do the UMAT... looks like im going to be a physio...

Hmm you know none of these shows are actually realistic...at all.

I even saw a registrar at a local hospital who had actually bothered to dress up... a little asian one from UNSW I think. Not so good with the patients though.

As for pay, conditions are a lot better here than in the US (despite what Americans would have you believe). They go into debt by over US$100k, whereas our HECS debt is roughly AU$50k. That doesn't even take into account the fact that we pay no interest (only inflation) and our repayments are something like 3-5% of annual taxable income, significantly lower than your average student loan.

Hehe yeah college rocks. I did that for House, Grey's Anatomy, Bleach (anime), Father Ted, and so many other things I can't even remember.

You can't judge how medicine is going to be on a fictional tv show that is based on 95% humour and 5% realism. If you want to see how it would be to be studying medicine or practicing medicine then watch RPA or Medical Emergency (based in The Alfred hospital, Melbourne).

Even then you wouldn't be able to make some kind of informed judgement. You think they show the "band aid" surgery on tv?

I love how the in-house lawyer is treated with indifference and driven to the brink of suicide - fresh take on the profession war

Brink? No he's well beyond the brink, just too cowardly to follow through. That's the point - he's not just a broken man, he doesn't even have enough resolve left to finish the job.
