Hey guys, I'm doing Aboriginal Studies at the moment, and have found out that not many teaching degrees outside of Newcastle make students do a compulsory Aboriginal Studies course...

So I'm interested.... Do you have to?
(please tell me what uni you're at and which level of teaching you're in as well... just to make life easier..)

Also, if you're at a uni where it isn't compulsory, do you have the option to do it as an elective??

My high school offered it, but no one ever in the history of the school ever did it.

For secondary at UNSW I don't even think there are any courses that relate to Aboriginal Studies on offer, let alone compulsory. I think that's understandable for secondary though considering we focus on our teaching areas outside of any psych/method type education courses.

Without Wings you said everything I wanted to say to that comment.....

It filters through EVERYTHING that you teach, regardless of the Aboriginal student enrolment in your class or even the school... regardless of EC, Primary or Secondary... its always there.. i think EVERY teacher should have to a compulsory course on it.

They carried with them a very interesting number system.
"1, 2, Many"

You can use that statement to show the historical development of number systems amongst different civilisations to your students. Tsk tsk, what a great maths teacher you'll turn out to be.

Not to my knowledge, thankfully, although I think we cover it in a bit of detail in one of the first year courses.

Im at ACU and we dont have to do an Aboriginal unit...we have a specialised course about Aboriginal education though...so maybe that's why

Things are changing within the education system here that includes Aboriginal perspective on most class room applications. If you dont study to know, how can u be an effective teacher? Its not so bad for yourselves to think outside yourselves, after all, as teachers, it will be your responsibility to help students develop this skill. that is for all school students.

That is for all students? Then we should do European and Asian studies too.
Perhaps they should create a "cultural" education subject that covers all the cultures that make the majority.

I don't really think teachers are to blame for the large number of Aboriginals not making it through school. But this is going into another issue now which I probably shouldn't start a discussion on.

I'm at UC.. We have a compulsory unit called Indigenous Education - What Works based on the What Works work program.
I wasn't so sure about it to start but I ended up really enjoying it and finding it really enlightening and helpful.
I am doing primary teaching but I'm pretty sure it's compulsory for secondary as well.
