Not really. A lot of people don't care when they're in year 11 but start working in year 12.

Nope, not at all.

Just study efficiently and consistently and you'll be fine!

The marks you achieve in Year 11 do not mean a thing in regards to your HSC.
However Year 11 work does link to the HSC, especially in maths where a large proportion of Prelim can be tested (up to 30% im pretty sure).

I believe (in 3u at least) 2 full questions of the HSC are straight from the Preliminary Course.

And how often does that happen? i actually don't think there will be much difference in rankings between 11 and 12.

I don't think so.
In y11 my ranks were like

1/30
5/13
16/81
9/39
15/60

then i worked hard in hsc to get

1/30
1/13
2/81
5/39
1/60

No study in y11, then i did in y12, and i beat my UAI goal by 4+

just going by whats happening so far in my school, I'd say marks will be really bunched early on especially for english until the halfyearlie stage where rankings will be held by one person only. For example atm for english we have 6 people sitting on first and on seventh (second) we have another 15ish.

The only subjects where the marks can be carried over is english and maths. In english, if you can't write essays and don't start trying till year 12 then you are at a disadvantage to other students who had diligently been practicising their essay skills. In maths, year 12 is built on year 11 so if you can't understand your year 11 stuff, then you should be worried about year 12. This is what I've found in ext1 anyway.

but other stuff like sciences? Not really. I was ranked very very low in chemistry in year 11, about 4th from the bottom. Then in year 12 I was ranked up the top. Just make sure you understand the basic concepts and it won't matter

yeah
thats true, maths is definitely carried over, its extremely hard to jump to the top, but its still possible to gain quite a few ranks, same for english

on a side note, my subjects are basically the same as yours!haha

with english though it depends if your first assessment is a speech. In our school it was and a lot of people that weren't expected to get anywhere near as high as they did because of their tutors.

Maths is pretty difficult to jump from about 60th to the top, however, other subjects such as English, Chem, Phys etc, it's a lot easier to do that. So yeah, ranks in Yr 11 do not reflect Yr 12 marks.

Year 11 does not reflect in Year 12, I was always at the bottom in Year 11, however in Year 12 I worked my butt off and scored a UAI of 86.25 which is a lot higher than the UAIs of the people who were like 1st, 2nd, 3rd in Year 11. They ended up scoring ones that could only get themselves into a Bachelor of Arts. lol I would never forget their faces when I told them I had the higher UAI:haha:

So if I were you guys(Class of '09, esp the underdogs) remind yourselves this: you now have a clean slate, this is your chance to try and achieve eternal glory and beat the homos!
