1-15 kms over the speed limit is 3 points and $120 from memory.

Its definitely 3 points, but the fines have gone down recently so I don't know exactly how much money.

Err, you can't get past the fine, and its not the RTA's fault, its yours.

You can still drive (assuming you still have all of your points) but one more offence and its a 3 month suspension.

$75 really isn't that much money, and unless you've been an idiot in the past you'll still have 4 pts.

Yeah its a shit feeling when you think you've been caught, especially when trying to overtake..... I remember I did the same thing you did once but luckily it was a truck so I didnt have to speed up to much! Go to 'my rta' (google it up) if your unsure of how many points you have, or Im sure your loss of points will be shown their before you get the letter in the mail (NB It wont be shown up immeditately!)

You can't blame the speed cameras, you should have a bit more foresight on the roads. If you need to be in a certain lane, don't leave it to the last minute.

EDIT: Also, its not like they're a suprise, you can get a map with every single fixed speed camera in NSW, and there are always 3 signs before you pass one.

It'll be acceptable if he had to speed up to change lanes otherwise he'd end up in wollongong.. but a 10min drive.. =S

And what conditions anyway? Clearly he was in the wrong for going over the speed limit.. Especially like MiuMiu said, it's no surprise that there was a speed camera there..

And since he wasn't all very much over the limit, it's not really a big deal.. He can still drive after his penalty.. Just has to be really careful for another four months or so

Whats the go with the signs leading up to a fixed speed camera!? Like Im not complaining but seriously its obvious its just revenue raising... if they REALLY wanted to stop speeding, dont let anyone know where the cameras are, dont advertise them, and then everyone will stick to the limit cos they dont know where they are and if they will get caught.... unless of course they legally have to tell the public or something! And then some may say 'that would give them more revenue so it cant be for revenue'... but no, cos the long term effect of what I said would be that 90% of people wouldnt speed cos they dont know where cameras are meaning overall the fines would decrease = less revenue.

You'll find that speed cameras are in places where it is more dangerous to speed, and indeed areas that have been identified as black spots. By warning people of speed cameras it is serving the purpose of slowing down most drivers so as to avoid any accidents before they happen, as well as punish those who drive unsafely for the conditions.

If it was pure revenue raising, they wouldn't put signs up.

EDIT: forgot to mention, don't bother writing a letter saying its your first offence, it doesn't work for provisional drivers.

By NSW law fixed cameras must be signed.

In Victoria, not only do they pop up randomly (there's no law on signs), they are stuck in concealed places like bottom of an overpass.

Apparently there needs to be a study on the location before they can put in a speed camera. It either has to be a dangerous area like a school zone or a known black spot. Although I know of at least 2 speed cameras that break this rule.

The problem I have with them is that they only give you about 3km/h, anything more than that you can be fined. It unnecessarily slows down traffic because everyone goes plenty under the speed limit to be sure, and makes black spots more dangerous because people concentrate on their speedo instead of on the road.

I am sure that if someone did a study on school zones with speed cameras they would find that if a kid actually did run out into traffic they would be more likely to be hit than if there was a speed limit of 50 or 60 and no speed camera.

Thats bullshit and you know it.

Find me proof that people slowing down for speed cameras actually causes more accidents.
