Are they the same thing?

Also, say I want to do arts.

But on the UAC book, arts is not shown combined with some other degree. Does that mean i cannot take for example computer science and arts if its not shown?

thanks.

yes, combined degrees and double degrees are the same thing...

for the UAC guide, look at your non-arts degree, and there should be combined degrees following it...

for example, pg 192 of UAC guide is B. Engineering (UNSW), pg 193 talks about the Computer Science major, now read pg 195, bottom left, it talks about the combined (or doubled) Engineering and Arts degree. :p

While there may not be a code for a computer science/arts double, you could always take a science (computer science major)/arts double.

Well, most of the time it involves taking the same core subjects, although the eventual name of the degree differs (using the bcst and bsc (computer science) at usyd as an example).

You should ask someone who is actually taking a double degree yet attempting a computer science or related major. I think that Laz may be doing something like that... ?

I do Commerce/Economics.

Basically just do all the core subjects of both the degrees, and a 'few' other related subjects. In a single degree u normally get to choose a non related field major, you dont do that in a double!

definitely not!! in combined you mix and math subjects from ur degrees, but in double degree you do subjects separately...

eg the engo/science one i am looking at requires two years of engineering...then transfer to facvlty of science for one year to do your science, then transfer back to engineering..

in general, double degree is better because you end up with two separate degrees as opposed to one degree which says you studied these two combined, but the advantage of combined is that you can make your timetable more flexible....so u should keep that in mind....

hope this helps you then

How about if say you do Arts/Science.

But after a year you only want to transfer from science into something else.

That won't affect the arts will it?

Commerce/Arts is a very popular course at UOW, just because with Arts, you can major in so many things which you can combine with Commerce: Politics, History, Legal Studies... theres so many more...

What uni are you apply for the BE/BSc cos I am applying for the combined BE/BSc degree at USyd and i thought that with this degree you get the two degrees. I can't find anything about a double degree of Engineering and Science? Could someone please clarify?
Thanks

yeah im applying for same one as you jimmoi.....the reason they dont have the double degree there is because they only list the combined ones, which i take it you are not interested in..

you should first apply for the single BE specialisation you want then apply for transfer 2 years into your degree (ie take up science in the third year)

No. You'll be doing (some, depending) the other half again, but the subjects you took in arts still counts.

no inasero. Combined degrees and Double degrees are used interchangeably. In a combined/double degree you get 2 degrees in one course, not 1 degree. When they say a course is a combined degree, it means the two degrees are integrated and supposedly optimised in this sense, hence it is better than doing 2 separate degrees. This also means u can finish 2 three year degrees in the course of 4-5 years.

What you said about 2 separate courses to get 2 separate degrees is not coined a double degree. If you do most of your first degree, transfer to second and do most of that, then complete both degrees together, that is simply doing two degrees and a method used to be eligible for prolonged HECS and government subsidized fees. This will usually take longer as you will probably have to do more subjects and majors (many of which you will find redundant in an integrated field). Still, all courses have a degree of flexibility and if you are doing a combined and you really want extra majors you can work something out with the course co-ordinator and get it approved by the dean. Its logical to just do the combined/double if you can.

All the USYD combined degrees I see are 5 years... is it possible if you do really well in the HSC/1st year uni to do them in 4?

No, not like that. You have to complete all the required subjects and say, two majors. The only way you will finish earlier is by doing more than the normal load of subjects per semester or by getting subjects exempt (for eg. you've done a similar subject already or have had experience in that field from previous work) where you will most probably have to sit for an exam.

Can you choose to take the greater workload? Or is it dependent on past performance?

And if you do take up a greater workload, does it mean you'll be studying/attending tutorials or lectures all day?

Just curious... a 4 year combined degree would be nice :)

yes at usyd you can choose to take a greater work load depending on the degree. i think you are limited to 32 credit points per semester and require the dean's permission if you wish to undertake more!

and yes will have more hours if you choose to take on extra subjects.
