Could someone explain to me what this means?

"Where a student does Majors in two cognate areas that have courses in common, a student may be permitted to have up to 12 units at Level II and 6 units at Level III be counted towards each Major sequence."

Does it mean that I can study only 12 common Level II units and 6 common Level III units between the two majors?

you can study as many common courses as you want, but you can only count 2 towards each major, provided youve fulfilled the requirements frow two majors, you cna have as many common courses as you want, you can only use 12 credits as fulfillign the requirements of both majors, after that you have to study additional courses to count towards the major regardless of wether or not it can be used in both courses, theres nothing to stop you studying courses that could count towards both majors after 12 credits, they just wont count,

You can take as many common courses as you like. But only 12 units of Level II and 6 units of Level III of common courses will count for BOTH majors.

The rest of the common courses will count for one major or the other (but not both), so they'll be just like taking uncommon courses in either major stream.

You can still major in both areas without issue.

Example:
I'm assuming each major is 42 units (because it's a double major). You choose to take the 12 units of level II and 6 units of level III common courses that you can.

Major X: 42 - 12 - 6 = 24 units remaining
Major Y: 42 - 12 - 6 = 24 units remaining

In total you'd have 48 units (8 subjects) remaining to complete your double major. These can be made up out of common or uncommon courses, but you won't be able to make those remaining 48 units any shorter than 8 subjects.

Bottom line: Effectively the common-course thing allows you to reduce a double-major which would otherwise take 14 subjects down to 11 subjects.
