So just started year 12 but don’t start ext 2 classes until week 3. I’m on 12 units, but since ext 2 is 2units I can afford to drop 3 units of subjects. I have been strongly advised from head of math and careers advisor to keep the extra unit, eng ext, but I don’t see any point since I’m not taking it to the hsc. How risky is it to drop down to 10 units before ext 2 even starts?

Since you can drop a subject at any point during year 12, you may wish to consider proceeding with your current subject combination as is. As you complete your first assessment task/exam for the subjects that you are thinking of dropping and become aware of your performance, you can compare your performance in each. This will allow you to make a more informed decision regarding the subject that you should drop, and that would be the one in which you end up performing worse.

Since there is still time before you start your Mathematics Extension 2 classes, perhaps allocating some time towards familiarising yourself with some of the content (focus on the first topic that you will be taught, if known) would also be good, allowing you to get a head start and possibly leading to a better attempt at your first task, which would help you perform at a higher standard.

I hope this helps! :D

Thanks for your response. The 2 subjects I want to drop I genuinely have no desire to study for ahead of exams, and since Year 12 is NOW, I'd much prefer to stick with my 5 other subjects (10 units). Performance doesn't matter as I know I can do well in my other subjects, I just need time, which can be sourced once the 2 subjects are dropped, hopefully. The real question was the fact the teachers have a protocol where you are recommended to keep an extra unit or 2, if ext 2 maths doesn't work out. So ( i dont know if you did maths ext 2), is Maths Ext 2 really THAT difficult (considering I haven't really struggled with Maths at all during high school)? That's the main thing, because it might be a bad trait but I can't see myself struggling THAT much to the point I genuinely might have to leave the subject, (hence relying on the extra unit as a crutch out of the course- and then being stuck with a subject I do NOT want to undertake for HSC).

if you've never struggled with math i think you'll probably never feel as if you need to drop ext 2 either, so you don't need the crutch that an extra unit or 2 gives you
also, based off of what ive done so far, ext 2 content really isnt that terrible as long as you stay on top of everything and study ahead.
the time you get with extra study periods is invaluable and much more preferable than being stuck in a class you don't want to try in, so its best to drop as soon as possible
good luck!
