Hi guys I currently do advanced maths but I am 99% sure I am dropping it and moving down to standard. I had differentiation in my first exam and failed that exam, even though it was a relatively easy exam, I wasn't in the right headspace, and I studied but didn't do the right type of studying- eg past hsc questions. I decided to try again and studied harder for this exam, I did most of the questions from my textbook and even did some more smarter maths hsc questions I got assigned at school. I prioritised this subject over all my other ones and I did try really hard, but unfortunately, I couldn't pass it, I was off from passing by 5 marks. This exam was harder than the last one, as a lot of the kids who got around 80% got around 60-70%. I'm not sure if I needed more practice and time for this subject, and I know it's not as hard as extension maths, but I do wish I could have performed better. I really thought I was going to be doing extension and advanced maths when I was younger because I was in 5.3 maths and genuinely tried really hard, and I'm still trying to process me dropping down in maths. I know the things I learnt aren't going to be wasted, but it's difficult for me to process because this isn't what I ever imagined. I did go through a hard time last year and my mental health got impacted. I still struggle with maintaining consistency and trying my best at school. I just wanted to know if me moving down will significantly impact my Atar, because I also do standard English and I know scaling isn't good for both these subjects. I'm not sure what uni course I want to do, but I know I genuinely gave it my best shot. It's sad because I used to be the kid who would have been doing advanced English and Maths, and unironically I ended up doing both standard subjects- not that it's a bad thing but I feel like I could have done better and didn't quite achieve my potential. I guess all those people who gave me a hard time last year are succeeding academically and getting amazing grades, while I got mentally impacted by them and a range of other factors and levelled down.

. I just wanted to know if me moving down will significantly impact my Atar,
standard is so ez, ive never been in advanced nor have i ever been anywhere near decent at maths but lowkey standard is my lowest effort subject atm

the breaking point for standard is 85 (i believe) which is quite high but if you've thugged out advanced then i'm sure you wouldn't get low enough for its scaling to actually destroy ur atar. u should probably check the standard syllabus to see if you find the content interesting and mayb speak to someone who had a similar experience since my perspective is kind of limited

You would also be restricting yourself from STEM and Math degrees

Not so much restricting, but it would make it a great deal harder to pick them up after hsc

And jaros u forgot bio is inc in stem :)
Yeah but ngl hsc science courses are nothing compared to the 'real' uni courses, so really not doing hsc science aint gonna do nothing. But not doing math will severely restrict you in STEM and math.

actually high school science does help a lot in uni courses, of course doing it would give you a really solid foundation in tertiary studies. but yes, doing advanced maths does open up a lot more options - i would recommend trying to stick through with it unless you want to pursue a humanities degree/ one that doesnt require maths. especially cause you said it was an easy exam, and u did 5.3. u should be ok!

Agreed

But yes, as @Jaros stated doing std will be of next to no help in any stem or math related degree. Even adv a good deal of the time is not enough so @dancingdreamer55 its is very dependent on what sort of degree you aspire to enrol into after high school.

A raw mark of 90 in Standard 2 Mathematics is the equivalent a raw mark of 77 in Mathematics Advanced in terms of UAC scaling.

I am going to assume the exam was out of 30 marks. So you got 10/30 (or did you mean 45/100?). Mathematics Advanced is just application of formulas just like Mathematics Standard 2 (judging from the syllabus).

Use the data to make your decision.

I don't think scaling should be significant concern though.

If u dont' need math adv in ur degree then I think its best to drop to std cause its so much easier to get top marks if u put in the effort and it takes up much less time than struggling in adv. I dropped to std last term and if ur struggling with adv I think its better to drop cause like the concepts in std are much easier to understand and stuff. But also its kinda late rn so you will have to catch up on all the year 11 and 12 stuff so far

yeah this was me (i ended up moving down after the first task). i find im much more happier in standard, im not spending hours on revising topics that i dont even get, plus im not really looking into some, like, engineering degree either. just aim to do really well on your subjects throughout and you'll be swell :)

im also only in year11 so idk how helpful this is

I got around 25.5/60 it was a half yearly exam so that may have made it more tough but my teachers are telling me to stay and just push through. They said it would be too stressful to catch up on all the content and too risky. I didn't listen to them when they recommended dropping down so I am staying for now.

That is good to hear, regardless of what you intend to do keeping adv math over std is always a better choice, especially if you can try to raise your marks and rankings in the next 2 asessments.

Yeah, Jaros is right but if you're ever struggling with a question. Take time to try solve it, if you cant solve it after a few mins, then ask gpt. This is so that you dont get over reliant and if you ever have a question you wont get frustrated after a few seconds.(that was me)

T
for math questions use mathgpt to answer your qs chat gpt is fine for math adv too
Thank you! Also in order to get good marks in maths, do you know any strategies or have any tips on how I can get better marks? I normally focus on textbook/hsc style questions, but I have a lot of gaps in my knowledge and I am worried because trials is around the corner and I don't want to fail again.
