i don't know if we have a dux at our school. the grade is so big that it would be almost unfair. i think we have an award for best result in internal assessment, and then best for external/uai. so two awards overall. i am 1st in 8 of my 10 units but i dont do any maths or sciences so i dont think i'm dux-worthy at all :D

2001 our dux was 99.9
last year it was 99.75.

the 99.9 would be pissed for missing out on all the 99.95 scholarships, lol

the same for most schools,
but of course, the dux gets 'predicted' in advance, for example the kid who comes 1st in the most subjects, has the best aggregate, etc.
thats the same a mac fields.... the chick last year who got it.. got 99.05 and apprently cried coz she diddnt pass the interview for med :p

Hmm...dux works by UAI at my school
You get your award at the next year's presentation night (!)

the funny thing is, the guy that was a shoe-in for dux all year (he was 1st in all his subjects except english) got beaten
our dux was 99.85 and he got 99.75

hmm yea, i was thinking about that... do they have to take into consideration the subjects you do? that'd be pretty difficult and the decision could be seen as being unfair either way.

dux

\Dux\, n. [L., leader.] (Mus.) The scholastic name for the theme or subject of a fugue, the answer being called the comes, or companion.

Where's Frigid and his Latin derivations/etymology of words :p

It's musical :)

and if you wanted to know what Fugue is:

Music. An imitative polyphonic composition in which a theme or themes are stated successively in all of the voices of the contrapuntal structure. :)

...and if you wanted to know what Contrapuntal means:

contrapuntal
adj. Music
Of, relating to, or incorporating counterpoint.

and lastly
counterpoint
n.
1. Melodic material that is added above or below an existing melody.
2. The technique of combining two or more melodic lines in such a way that they establish a harmonic relationship while retaining their linear individuality.

:D

'dux' comes from the latin word 'dux', which basically means leader or commander or some other such word depending on the context, which is prbly why at my school ages ago, the captain used to be called 'dux'. guess that meaning has long since been lost.

ours (even though we don't really have one, there is an award for the highest achiever) is based solely on rankings.

The same at my school.

If you did Arts, Retail, IT, Business, D&T, Music, etc and came 1st in everything, you would probably be 1st aggregate. (of course, this doesn't happen very often).
