Hey ppls,

I have a fairly old DVD drive on my comp (got it ages ago, like in 2000), its an LG 12x I think...

It plays all normal dvd's fine, but everytime i put in like a generic-branded dvd, it reads, but then freezes up when I run it. And sometimes it does work (allows u to transfer files from the dvd-r to comp), but then wont work other times.

Branded dvd-r's like TDK etc all work fine, its just these generic type that don't work.

Any advice?

Maybe see if there is a firmware update for it and give that a try. Try the LG website. You'll have to know what drive it is that you have though.

Hm...

1) You could try updating the firmwire, as mentioned
2) Get one of those 'clean the head' disks
3) The laser may be out of alignment, and not able to read those disks
4) Burner may be old and on the way out

Try the first two, then if all else fails, take it back to the place you bought it (if it's still under warranty).
