dx is the limit when delta-x approaches zero. So when you do the finite summation with the approximation you use delta-x and once you take the limit to get an integral you use dx.

just stick to the conventions. some markers get rlly pissy if you dont follow the procedure they think is correct. anyways on paper deltax looks fairly similar to dx
