It appears that nobody has posted here since late last year.
As we start 2004, I'm curious to know who is studying E&E for their H.S.C. this year, what topics they are currently doing and what texts they have been using in class.
I would be more than willing to share my notes. :)

Also, would it be easier to just post class notes in the assigned topics?

Oh how I love this subject. People seem to think it's bad, but it's nice and simple and interesting.

We finished Tectonic Impacts last term, I think we're starting our next topic tomorrow. Making fossils out of chocolate...could be for Environments Through Time?

We're using the 'Spotlight' textbook, but have a stack of notes just as thick given to us by the teacher who absolutely adores geology and thinks we need 1st year uni stuff.

Cape, that would be terrific. Thanks! :)

We are just finishing up Plate Tectonics at the moment. Im not sure what we are doing next.

lol! My teacher is just like that too (He even dragged us to a lecture at the Museum, It was on tectonics and Ice-Ages). We have folders filled with notes and they will continue to pile up as the year goes by. I'm trying to keep it all organised by separating the notes in folders for each topic.

Midnight, I understand what you mean, we only have four students this year, we had 9 to begin with early in preliminary, but most dropped out in the first 2 weeks. There is an upside to it however, its easy for the teacher and us to see what we need help with, its easier for the teacher to concentrate on a smaller group of students and get by with the work faster without all those interruptions. There is also no Yr11 class this year. Its not because they didnt want one, It was because of the fact that there werent enough students and also if it had gone ahead it would have had to run off the school schedule (before + after school). That idea wouldnt be possible anyways, seeing as my class does that. :)
We have classes Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30-5pm and every day 5, period 4 (50minutes - It used to be Friday morning at 7:45am). I dont mind, I enjoy it!

The books we use are:
Earth Science and the Environment by Thompson and Turk.
Environmental science by the Australian Academy of Science
Geological Science, Perspectives of the Earth by Australian Academy of Science
This Dynamic Earth: the story of Plate Tectonics

lol are u serious only 4 people in your class!

My class has approximately......25-30 people. It started off as two classes during the prelimanary year but soon people started dropping out, so they decided to join classes. Another reason we joined was because we only have one teacher that specialises in Earth, so the class that was stuck with the not so experienced teacher in Earth struggled....and the marks showed (hey I was in that class and I was just barely passing).

So in the end, it is a pretty big class but its a good class, people help each other out and our teacher is coping well with the combined class....oh except for those moments where she just loses it and goes something like this :chainsaw:

My class has 5 people. :) We're all relatively good friends, so it can be like an extended recess or lunchtime during some lessons. We got to go on a field trip to Bathurst, it was good fun [and slightly educational...] We only have one guy though, and so the teacher [also male] takes pity on him all the time!
I don't think I'd like being in a larger class. My largest is English, that has about 20, and I feel drained after being in there for 10 minutes! :p

We're always trying to convince our teacher to take us to museums or lectures, he planned one once but the school wouldn't approve it. :(
My notes are just all shoved into the front of the text book at the moment, so it's about 10cm high, I'll have to organise them sometime soon so I can start doing my study notes, if we don't get any.

It sucks that they couldn't do a prelim class at your school ParanoidAndroid. I think this year at my school they have 12 people, but since it's only a small school they'll let a class run with as few as 4 people to begin with.

And that's an awful lot of textbooks! I'll have to see if we have any of them in the library. The Spotlight one seems to answer the syllabus well enough, but we do need some extra help with some details and diagrams.

Yes we only have 4 people, we also have around 130 people(girls) in our year. Most do Bio. I think it's a total of 50-55 (2 classes).
It's pretty awful if you have a teacher that doesn't specify in a certain course. I'm glad that you now have one which does.
I'm also glad that I now have one for Chemistry, the other teacher not only didn't explain things properly, she yelled at anybody who even tried to open their mouth.

Ah. you went to Bathurst too, did you collect a lot of rock samples while you were up there? We sure did. :)
There were alot of flies too :p

We don't always use the textbooks, but it does have really good information. We have copies which we leave at home and ones that we leave at school, it's too heavy to carry around otherwise and they certainly aren't thin books!

My year has 80 or so. Bio has about 16 people, Physics/Chem have around 10. We're not big on sciences. ;)

We only collected a couple of rock samples, I don't know where they went though. We have tons back in the classroom. We went to Jenolan Caves though, and a mine [got to see all the gigantic trucks! Apparently that was relevant to a part of the course we're doing later]. There were quite a few flies!

Today's prac was actually a bit of revision, we got a roll of toilet paper, taped it to the desks and did a timeline of the last 5 billion years. It was absolutely hilarious, the teacher is asking if we can keep it set up in there!

Im doing Prelim Earth and Enviromental this year and our class is roughly 10 people more or less. I only switched into the class recently and it seems alright, though I don't think im as fascinated as you guys. I would have prefer Ancient History if it wasn't for bad topic choices I wouldn't be in Earth and Enviromental but it seems quite easy with a decent scaling.

i totally love earth. its my fav subject, and i have the best teacher for it, shes totally obsessed with it too which it fab. my class has about 14 ppl in it... i know you were talking about the spotlight textbook, but we use the cambridge one, which i personally think is so much better for the detail and extra info...if you're hungry for it, cos it can be a bit confusing at first read. i do have both though...
