which makes 7300+ dead.....and unfortunately this will no doubt rise

I remeber first hearing about this 10 hours ago..then they were reporting only 20 dead :-|

The sacle of this is just overwhelming.....

Most of the East asian region, and its now three times as bad as 9/11.

And the day after christmas as well.....

I can only hope nobody from here is seriously affected.

Once again, thoughts and prayers to all those affected

oh my god
that is devastating..no you know what dude i was thinking exactly the same thing. were this happening in a western region, i bet it would be on the telly 24/7.

virtually every south east asian country has been affected by these. one can only imagine how terrifying those tsunamis would have been..

It just pains me to see these death toll figures just go up by the minute.....

Apparently, many of the people saw the sea receed from the shore before the tsunami came. They wer curious and saw fish on the newly uncovered land so they went right up onto the beaches and got swept away when it came

Tis very saddening.

well its 8000+ now

8335 and counting
December 27, 2004 - 3:07AM

I wouldn't be sure, you must recall with the World Trade Centre attacks the numbers of dead estimated 24 hours or so afterwards were more than double, if I remember correctly, the official death count nowadays.

It could go up, but it could also go down.

Tis a sad day that the average Australian doesn't give a shit and is more worried about Post Christmas sales and one dead soldier than 12 000 dead (asians) people.

If this happened in the US every single channel would be covering it and everyone would care. Oh, its only asia though, who cares.

I don't mean to sound rude or evil or anything. But most of these countries are densely populated - hence why so many ppl are dead or died. Also cause most of Asia is found on a fault line - ofcourse these things are going to happen and places like the maldives are extremely low to the sea level.

Anyway, its really sad ... hope my friends are alright condsidering they have gone to thailand and india.

my dad who is in east timor at the moment working
said that the tidal wave is somehow makingi its way towards indonesia right now
and that it could hit him in east timor
but it is not likely as they have alot of islands around to protect them

heaps of ppl have been ringing up today
and we knew about the earthquake and tidal wave
but didnt make the connection u think that we would
my mum stressed though when she found out
and was pissed off when we didnt tell her bout it

its sad that so many people died and i know that asia is densly populated and all that
but it is still not fair for 12000+ people to die

Cause asia is on a plate fault line ... the smallest earthquake in the ocean can produce a tsunami. And because the asian continent is low lying and is densely populated it is very easy for a tsunami to destroy the areas. I'd be guessing in saying that you wouldn't have enough time to try and escape from the wave - due mainly to its height - u'd need to be very high up to avoid the wave - but you will be dragged out to sea when the wave hits. I'd think that it would be really cool to see a tsunami.
